Nutwood Farm is open to the public for five to six weekends each year (March to April) during nut harvest season for fresh chestnuts and walnuts with no chemicals or fertilisers. WHAT TO EXPECT ON ARRIVAL
Nutwood Farm covers about 40 acres of land, but the trees are on a flat area spread over about six acres. We have mainly chestnut trees (up to 25 years old) and some walnut trees. We provide free
parking and one public toilet. (There are also public toilets in Mt Wilson). There are no shops or petrol stations past Bilpin - and nothing at Mt Wilson or Mt Irvine, so make sure you have plenty of petrol and everything you might need! We have buckets - but please bring your own gloves and tongs. Once you've parked the car at Nutwood Farm, it's about 200m to walk to the orchard of 200 plus trees. We have mainly chestnut trees and some walnut trees. In general, the walnuts fall about 2 to 3 weeks after the chestnuts. The best time for chestnuts is mid to late March and from late March to early April for walnuts. The season generally finishes by mid April. Easter is always particularly busy - and a lot of fun. WHAT TO BRING
You should wear sensible, closed, flat heeled shoes or runners. If it's wet, gumboots or waterproof shoes will be more comfortable. Do bring a sunhat or raincoat as weather demands - and some sunscreen and bottled water. DIRECTIONS
Nutwood Farm is located at 22 Danes Way, Mt Irvine. Mt Irvine is at the end of Mt Wilson Road. If you're coming from Sydney, take the M2, which becomes the M7. Exit the M7 at the RICHMOND ROAD turn off on your left. Turn right at the set of lights immediately after the freeway and follow the road to the township of Richmond, then drive on towards North Richmond. You are heading in the direction of Lithgow. Stay on the Bells Line of Road all the way past Bilpin. Eventually, you'll see the turn off to MT WILSON. Turn right. Drive through the village of Mt Wilson and continue on past the park and the Cathedral of Ferns towards Mt Irvine. When you get to the T intersection at Mt Irvine, veer left onto DANES WAY. Follow the YELLOW SIGNS to NUTWOOD FARM. The trip takes about 2.5 hours. Many families make a day of it and stop on the way home to pick apples in Bilpin or have a coffee and apple pie at Tutti Frutti.
