A big day of stockwork today.

Whilst our Jersey herd were busy getting their pedicures, at the same time Dan was at our second farm dehorning calves.

It's one of those jobs that often sparks a few questions.
All of our calves are given sedation and pain relief before being dehorned. Dehorning is done while they're young to reduce the risk of injuries to other cows and the people handling them throughout their lives. Animal welfare is always front of mind, and we're grateful to have procedures and vet support that help make it as low-stress as possible!

Through genetics, we're also reducing the need for dehorning altogether. We're now using more polled bulls, which pass on the naturally hornless trait to their calves. It's another step forward in improving animal welfare, and it's great to see genetics helping shape the future of dairy farming.

Thanks to Compass Vets for dedicating the better part of today to our farms and the care of our animals!
