St Joseph’s Day
This is a very special day for the Catholic Church, and for many around the world.
St Joseph is the earthly father of Jesus and Virgin Mary’s husband. He is also the patron Saint of the universal church. This day is also known as Father’s Day in Italy and many other European countries.
In my mother’s town of Salaparuta Sicily, San Giuseppe is the patron saint of our town.
They celebrate by making a special bread with fennel and make an altar which they decorate with amazing biscuits and bread which they all make by hand.
I watched my Zia Fifa, Aunty, make these biscuits and bread for my whole childhood. This is my third year trying to make it myself, as I live so far from her. I haven’t even got close to her talent but I’m trying, and I’m also teaching my children, the next generation, about the importance of this special feast day for us. They always remember it as “Zia Fifa’s special fennel bread day”
I’ve attached photos of my Zia Fifa making the bread, photos of the altar in Salaparuta and some of my bread, which didn’t last long because the boys ate it as soon it came out of the oven.
Happy Feast Day Saint Joseph.
