Happy International Women’s Day! In this UN year of the woman farmer we celebrate the women, men, girls and boys in our team who help me (cherry grower Ingrid) to keep this orchard running. In a boy heavy family it was so special to have my amazing nieces join us last season.

Plenty of pairs of eyes watching us pruning. We’ve been summer pruning by hand in the high vigour variety/rootstock trees to help bring more light to the lower canopy and hoping to improve the trees balance from growing leaf to setting fruiting buds. We’ve also cut back some trees very hard, I’m hoping to stimulate some new shoots low down to graft on another variety - trying to find better pollinators for our Samba cherries.

Summer pruning 🍒. Every tree, by hand, every year. 🍒 Letting the light into the lower limbs so they can bud up for next year’s cherries, keeping trees short for easier picking. This block has been through a renewal pruning process the last few years, hoping it pays off with a bigger crop load this year.

Get in early before the heat, then spend the afternoon in the aircon pitting these beauties to make something refreshing like this Hungarian chilled sour cherry soup 🍒, a cold cherry pie or a cocktail syrup.
Another ‘last chance’ for the season - I’d kept some trees unpicked and netted to trial how long the morello sour cherries would keep ripening. A heatwave and broken irrigation pump was a bigger test for them but they’re looking and tasting remarkably good..
Sweet cherries are finished for the season.

Delivery to Coonabarabran, Coolah, Gunnedah & Narrabri possible tomorrow or Tuesday.
Tart cherries, full of flavour - do yourself a favour and get to know this very special fruit. They are quite different to sweet cherry varieties. They make the best jams, preserves and liqueurs.

Morello sour cherries have some more fruit ripening. The orchard will open for one last chance for the season. Sunday 4 January 8a-12pm
Pick your own or ready picked (please contact us to order). We will pick the trees clean so let us know to save some for you if you’ll visit.

Morello are a variety of sour or tart cherries - a different species to the usual sweet cherry varieties. A very special fruit they can be eaten fresh, used in jams and preserves, liqueurs, syrups abd cooking.

Very tart, they are packed full of a fascinating complex of flavour and are really good for you - with anthocyanins, antioxidants and melatonin.
 
Sour cherries are not common in shops as they are quite delicate and the shelf life isn’t robust enough to shine in the usual retail supply chain.

The Morellos have become one of my favourite fruits, not least because of the many stories and recipes for this fruit that visitors have shared with us. They hold a special place in the hearts and memories of those who love them.

Happy New Year! We hope 2026 brings good health and happiness. We’re taking a few days rest with our boys. Open again Sunday morning for one last picking as the next wave of Morellos ripen. Sunday 4 Jan 8-12. Morellos Sour cherries only.
