Glorious warm autumn day - how can it be June?!

Mudgee’s summer was long, very hot and oh so very dry. Its been delightful to have rain these past few weeks. The trees have perked up, these apricots have turned their autumn colours for a few weeks while the cherries are still green (the leaves that didn’t fall early from heat stress).
The trees may be as confused as I am. Our autumn is usually April-May and by now we’d have frosts and the trees would be in their winter dormancy by now and accumulating the winter chill they need to blossom well.
Curious to see how this plays out ….

Plenty of learning about cherry growing at field days in Orange and the Adelaide Hills
We’re working on plans to replant of some of our older blocks and looking at newer ideas in training and pruning cherry trees. Its about growing the best cherries while also being more efficient for pruning and picking to stay viable as labour costs keep going up. It’s complex and fascinating as different varieties of cherries grow in different ways.
Conversations too about options for managing heat stress as heatwaves become more common at picking time.

Happy International Women’s Day! In this UN year of the woman farmer we celebrate the women, men, girls and boys in our team who help me (cherry grower Ingrid) to keep this orchard running. In a boy heavy family it was so special to have my amazing nieces join us last season.

Plenty of pairs of eyes watching us pruning. We’ve been summer pruning by hand in the high vigour variety/rootstock trees to help bring more light to the lower canopy and hoping to improve the trees balance from growing leaf to setting fruiting buds. We’ve also cut back some trees very hard, I’m hoping to stimulate some new shoots low down to graft on another variety - trying to find better pollinators for our Samba cherries.

Summer pruning 🍒. Every tree, by hand, every year. 🍒 Letting the light into the lower limbs so they can bud up for next year’s cherries, keeping trees short for easier picking. This block has been through a renewal pruning process the last few years, hoping it pays off with a bigger crop load this year.

With luck there will be cherry blossom when we host the Mudgee Farmers' Market Farm walk in the September holidays.

Get in early before the heat, then spend the afternoon in the aircon pitting these beauties to make something refreshing like this Hungarian chilled sour cherry soup 🍒, a cold cherry pie or a cocktail syrup.
Another ‘last chance’ for the season - I’d kept some trees unpicked and netted to trial how long the morello sour cherries would keep ripening. A heatwave and broken irrigation pump was a bigger test for them but they’re looking and tasting remarkably good..
Sweet cherries are finished for the season.

Morello Sour Cherries. Last chance this morning to pick these or buy boxes of them from the orchard.
Delivery to Coonabarabran, Coolah, Gunnedah & Narrabri possible tomorrow or Tuesday.
Tart cherries, full of flavour - do yourself a favour and get to know this very special fruit. They are quite different to sweet cherry varieties. They make the best jams, preserves and liqueurs.
