This week its the morello sour cherries coming into blossom. A different species to the sweet black cherries they grow quite differently. It’s fascinating how different plants come into bloom at different times. These morellos usually ripen close to Christmas. Small, sour and packed with flavour they’re pretty special.

As the orchard springs to life we hire in beehives spread through the orchard for pollination. Insects are needed to move pollen between flowers to give fruit.
Lots of diversity of insects hovering in the blooms but somehow the bees just don’t seem to be getting amongst the blossom as much as they usually would. Our beekeeper has been back to check on them and its hard to work out. Perhaps another quirk of this very strange year. Hot, dry days have dried off other flowers in the ground flora of the orchard and around. While we’d expect that’d make the irrigated cherry flowers more attractive perhaps there just isn’t enough nectar. Very odd.
Hopefully there’s enough activity from the mix of insects buzzing about the flowers to do the job.
The cooler change may help get the nectar moving and the 🐝 buzzing for a great fruit set. 🐝🌸🍒
