Boxgum Grazing is managed by Sam and Claire Johnson on Windermere a 1500 hectare property near Young on the South West Slopes of NSW.

Our farm supports a diverse mix of perennial grasses and box gum woodlands and our management is focussed on increasing the biodiversity and biological health of this landscape. We are passionate about land management, regenerative agriculture, local employment and producing excellent food. We see no reason great outcomes for conservation of wildlife and species diversity can't coexist with the production of healthy food. It is our vision to create a vibrant, diverse farm; a polyculture of complementary businesses that produce nutritious healthy food, real incomes and livelihoods and a landscape of diversity and beauty. We consider ourselves gardeners of the landscape where the tools we use are the technology of water pipe and electric fencing, cattle and pigs and all the plants and biological life we can encourage. With these we aim to produce fertile biologically active soils, a tapestry of wildlife and native species and healthy, nutritious food for people. After becoming frustrated with the reality of commodity markets we are returning to relationship marketing, because we want our food to go direct to people who want excellent food and are sick of the industrial food system and understand the vital connection between healthy land and healthy food.

Half an hour late to move the cattle this morning and they were very aware of it

Grass looks like a forest when you are only a day old

Even while lambing we still move our sheep every day, just much more slowly and carefully. The lambs can quickly lose their way but their mums are ever attentive to bring them back onto the right path

The move across the road doesn’t always flow so smoothly but it has to be celebrated when it does!

First calf of the year during her first ever move

She missed the gate, walked through the electric fence and received a ‘welcome to the world’ zap

Hiking back up the hill

We scanned our ewes in the rain today to see who was pregnant and who wasn’t. With the job done everyone is keen to head back after missing breakfast and lunch

26/05/2026

The farm is wet with creeks flowing and grass growing

We have hardly had a frost since early April which has given more grass more opportunity to convert sunlight into growth

19/03/2026

Sometimes our pigs have a job to do and find themselves on capped or boggy soil that needs to be broken up or aerated

But sometimes they find themselves in a pig paradise

Summer grazing

It has been far too hot for us but the cattle and sheep are still out there grazing, day after day

14/01/2026

We are back in the butchery and orders are now open for pickup and delivery

See you soon!

18/12/2025

Not long now! Orders close tomorrow at 10 am!

We’ll be back mid-January
