Helm Wines

Helm Wines Helm Wines is an award winning family owned winery located at Murrumbateman in the Canberra District

Helm Wines was established in 1973 by Ken and Judith Helm and was one of the first commercial wineries in the Canberra District Wine Region. Located just outside of Murrumbateman, approximately 30 km north of Canberra, the winery is still family owned and operated and was given a 5 star rating in James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion 2012. It is well known for producing award-winning Riesling

s and Cabernet Sauvignons. The winemakers are Ken Helm AM and daughter Stephanie, who are fourth and fifth generation descendants of German vinedressers from the Rhineland, who established vineyards near Albury and Rutherglen in 1860s.

Wine writer RICHARD CALVER sits up straight and pays attention as he gets a lesson from master winemaker Ken Helm in a former schoolhouse, a tiny wooden structure, built in 1888.

Happy International Riesling Day! A special shout out to The Real Review and Huon Hooke for a great article, just in time to celebrate this day of days, the most important wine holiday in our calendar ✨

There are few more single-minded proselytes for the riesling grape in Australia than Ken Helm AM.

As we head into our 50th vintage, lets raise a glass to the Canberra Wines district, and celebrate just how far we've come as a wine region, first class all the way.

Thanks for visiting The Canberra Times 🍷

This Valentine's Day weekend, why not show your love by treating yourself and those around you to our new release 2025 Tumbarumba Riesling. Getting some great reviews, this lively style ofwine from the foothills of the Snowy Mountains is fruit forward, zesty and zingy, just perfect to round out these hot summer days.

Jane from Halliday Wine Companion has given our Tumba rizza a 93.

Head out to the cellar door this weekend to be the first to try the Tumba, or grab some online.

Tim the Yowie Man exploring the reason why our Riesling tastes so good! It’s the Batemans Breath. And a good wine maker 😉

What do you call the cooling easterly 'sea' breeze that often blows in from the coast after a hot summer day in the Canberra region?

The Braidwood Bliss?
The Bungendore Buster?
The Nelligen Nurse?
Thr Clyde Chill?

It is created by cool sea air rushing up over the coastal escarpment as hot air rises above the land mass and often reaches as far inland as Wagga.

Murrumbateman winemaker Ken Helm refers to it as 'the Batemans Breath' and explains without it we wouldn't have the cool climate wines the region is so famous for as it provides the temperature variation and cool nights that contribute to the acidity and freshness of the Riesling and Cab Sav grapes.
