Found a trail of milk next to this two day old calf and no surprises it was leading to Wattledene Dolly

This weekend has marked a very special milestone for us as a stud. In 2022 Tahlia attended the Australian Sheep and Wool Show for work, where she met Phil in the cattle display. He was looking for a show team manager, and Tahlia was looking to enter the industry again after a break to graduate university and then being busy with full time work.

4 years later in partnership with Phil Hogan at Wattledene Murray Greys which has seen us as show team managers, joint youth program mentors for many students entering the industry, and most of all, privileged to call him a friend and mentor within that time.

Those who know Phil can all agree he is generous with his time, knowledge and support. He’s the kind of person who would give you the shirt off his back if you were cold and it was the last thing he had. There is never a dull moment, problem that can’t be solved or phone call that goes unanswered when you need a chat.

So here’s to four years Phil of the Wattledene-Ferguson ‘dream team’, and here’s to many more and all the exciting opportunities they bring for both studs and the adventures still to come 🎉

Huge congratulations to all the participants and organisers of the Studby Victoria Handlers Camp held in Geelong over the past few days. The event was incredibly well run, and it’s been fantastic to hear so much positive feedback about what everyone gained from the camp.

A special thank you to the organisers for all their hard work, and to the students who proudly showed some of the Wattledene animals. We were thrilled with the results, coming away with Reserve Champion Bull, Reserve Champion Female, and a number of class wins.

Special mention to Bethany Cole for achieving Champion Junior Judge — an outstanding effort. Congratulations also to everyone else who placed, and to those who simply got involved and gave it their all.

A sincere thank you as well to Max Perry and Darren Perry for transporting the cattle down and back safely, and to Brock and his family for helping move the gear and equipment. It’s no small task caring for a number of animals, their feed, and ensuring everything is transported smoothly — your efforts are greatly appreciated.

A brilliant team effort by all involved — well done everyone! 👏🐂🚛

A good mix of cows and heifers here, with the majority due over the next month or two. The paddock is starting to fill up nicely — four calves already on the ground and all healthy.

Still a tough season but...
Condition holding strong.
Bags coming on.
Quiet, content females doing their job.

Depth, fertility and doing ability — the foundations of the Wattledene herd.

Plenty more to come.

How good is this 💪🌧️🐮

Wattledene Hermione (WDS S34) delivered twin heifer calves today, just before a big storm rolled through. You couldn’t script it better — calm, steady and doing her job like the elite cow she is.

At just 5 years old, this is her fifth calf — and she’s still holding outstanding condition through some tough seasons. Fertile, functional and feminine… everything we breed for at Wattledene.

We couldn’t be happier with her consistency and doing ability.

I spent time looking out at dry paddocks, near empty dams, depleted hay stocks and large numbers of invading wildlife and feral animals.
I went for a drive recently as part of the Lions Club need for feed.
I saw burnt paddocks, empty dams tanks and pipes that no longer existed, no hay or hay sheds, reduced livestock and no wildlife. It reminded me of a saying.

Many people spend their lives trying to fulfil their dreams. Others head out to grab that opportunity. Over 18 months Hannah has continually amazed and impressed, with her management of animals, bright smile and great sense of humour. On the weekend, Hannah moves to NSW to begin a traineeship with the famous horse trainer Andrew Barnett. We wish Hannah, all the best and thank you
