We talk about machine - sophisticated, complicated with artificial intelligence built-in. But how about living being. Are they more sophisticated than Chandrayan II?

Human body is probably the most sophisticated machine. Even our food production chain. For example, seed to seedling to flowering to fruit bearing of a vegetable plant. Or cow converting green fodder into milk.

আমরা জটিল, উন্নত এবং অত্যাধুনিক মেশিন এর কথা বলি যাতে artificial intelligence যুক্ত করা আছে। কিন্তু জীবজগত? তার কি চান্দ্রায়ণ ২ এর থেকেও বেশি উন্নত মেশিন?

মানব শরীর সম্ভবত সবচেয়ে উন্নত মেশিন। এমনকি খাদ্য উত্পাদনের প্রক্রিয়াও। যেমন বীজ থেকে ছাড়া গাছ, তার থেকে ফুল ও ফল। বা গরুর ঘাস খেয়ে দুধের মতো পুষ্টি সম্পন্ন খাদ্য উত্পাদন।

Dear Friends, Happy Festive Greetings. Didn't post during the Pujas. We had a new member in our family. A male calf was born on the day of Navami. Both mother and the calf are doing fine.

প্রিয় বন্ধুরা, উত্সবের মরসুমের শুভেচ্ছা। পুজোর দিনগুলোতে পোস্ট করিনি। এরই মধ্যে এক নতুন অতিথি এসেছে। নবমীর দিন একটা নতুন বাছুর হলো। মা এবং বাচ্ছা দুজনেই ভাল আছে।

.......continued from my previous post. So what we can do about the methane issue of dairy cow. Scientists say the bacteria that generates methane in a cow's rumen is hereditary/ genetical. They are trying to find out selective breed that produces less methane. But that's into the future.

But what we can do here and now is to utilise high yielding cow i.e. having more milk per cow. That way methane generation per liter of milk will reduce somewhat.

But what is the reality in West Bengal, where our farm is located, about milk yield of a cow. And by the way, it has a strong connection with farmer's income, milk adulteration and nutrition security of the society.

গরুর মিথেন issue নিয়ে তাহলে কি করা যেতে পারে। বিজ্ঞানীদের মতে গরুর rumen এ যে ব্যাকটিরিয়া মিথেন তৈরী করে সেগুলো hereditary / genetical। যদি কম মিথেন তৈরী হয় এরকম breed selection করা যায় বা তৈরী করা যায়, তাহলে সমাধান হতে পারে। কিন্তু সেটা ভবিষ্যতের কথা।

যেটা এক্ষুনি করা সম্ভব সেটা হলো উচ্চ উত্পাদনশীল গরু পালন। অর্থাৎ একটা গরু থেকে অনেকটা দুধ পাওয়া। তাতে মিথেন generation par liter দুধ অনেকটাই কমতে পারে।

কিন্তু পশ্চিমবঙ্গের বাস্তব চিত্রটা কি এই উত্পাদনশীলতার নিরিখে? মনে রাখবেন একজন দুগ্ধ চাষীর আয়, দুধে ভেজাল, দুধের দ্বারা সমাজের স্বাস্থ্যের সুনিশ্চিন্তকরণ এবং এই মিথেন জনিত climate change effect - সবটাই একে অন্যের সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে আছে।

পরের post এ এটা নিয়ে আরও কথা হবে।

Milk, cow, methane and its green house effect - do you know that's a big contributor to climate change? Cows (and buffaloes) are ruminants i.e. they have a complex digestion system. Methane is generated in their rumen (part of stomach) which they belch out through burping. Methane is also generated from urine and dung (5 to 10%). Following facts are available on net

In one year, the amount of methane a dairy cow produces is equivalent to the greenhouse gas emissions from a mid-sized vehicle driven 20,000 kilometres.

দুধ, গরু, মিথেন গ্যাস ও তার green house effect - জানেন কি বিশ্ব উষ্ণায়ন আর জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের সঙ্গে এর সম্পর্ক। গরু মোষ ইত্যাদি প্রাণীর হলো ruminant, অর্থাৎ এদের digestive system বেশ জটিল। এদের পাকস্থলীর একটা অংশ হলো rumen যেখানে মিথেন তৈরি হয় যা গরুর ঢেকুরের মাধ্যমে পরিবেশে নির্গত হয়। কিছু মিথেন আবার তৈরি হয় urine আর গোবর থেকে (5-10%).

একটা mid size গাড়ী 20,000 km চললে যে green house gas বার হয়, তা একটা গরুর এক বছরের emission এর সমান।

আজ সকালে মাছ তুলে বিক্রী করা হলো ফার্মের পুকুর থেকে। SKK একটা integrated ফার্ম। হাঁস আর মাছ এই integration এর একটা পর্যায়। একটা পুকুরের ecosystem এ হাঁস আর মাছ একসাথে বড় হয়। খুব সামান্য খাবার দিতে হয় বাইরে থেকে।

This morning we sold some fish from our farm's pond. SKK is an integrated farm. Duck and Fish are one level of integration. They grow up together in a pond's ecosystem with very little feed input from outside.
