Hi, it’s Freeda here ( you know, “FREEDA ROAM”) #138
I was relating my life story to some of the younger girls here at Out ’N’ About eggs to show them I wasn’t always a bossy old fossil as they call me. After that first move out of the barn, life moved on at a rapid pace. I learned to know Mum’s calls, to find shade in the middle of the day and to run for cover when it started raining. While my upbringing was ideal, life on the farm wasn’t without its dangers. If the alarm was given that there was a hawk or eagle circling, or a fox skulking about at dusk or even just a storm coming through, we were taught to take shelter under Mum or run for the barn. As the weeks turned to months, I became more independent. Without really noticing, my fluffy down turned into a mat of sleek feathers and my little chick “peeps” turn into “clucks”. I’ve been aware of the young roosters that are about the farm for a while. I hear them learning to crow at sunrise and see them strutting around the yard.
I hadn’t really taken much interest until I saw HIM.. Iridescent black and emerald feathers with a bright red comb and the biggest set of dangling wattles I’ve ever seen. I’m Smitten! I’ll have to find out his name.
Till Next Time, Freeda.

Hi, it’s Freeda here (you know,” FREEDA ROAM”) #137
I was telling some of the young disrespectful girls here at Out “N” About eggs, that I too was young once. My story is…I was hatched in a lovely old barn at Winter Creek Farm not too far from here. The first thing I remember were the sounds of other farm animals and the light that I could see through the cracks that started to appear in my eggshell. The next thing I remember is the shell completely breaking apart and the feeling of warmth from my mother’s feathers as she sat on our nest, then the movement of my siblings as they hatched as well. At first our life consisted only of our nest of straw hidden behind an old tractor tyre in the barn, but after a few days we were encouraged to venture out for the first time. So, on wobbly legs I moved out from under my Mum’s protective wing and stood in the sunshine for the first time, taking in the sight and sounds of the other farm animals and green grass as far as I could see. I learnt to copy Mum picking at grass seeds and bits of grain the lovely farmer and his wife had thrown around and soon had the confidence and strength to run ahead exploring, what I thought was going to be my home for life…
Till next time. Freeda.

Hi, it’s Freeda here (you know,” FREEDA ROAM”) #136
I’m feeling a bit down and dejected at the moment. I overheard some of the younger girls talking about me yesterday and their comments were far from flattering. They referred to me as “the bossy old spinster”. Also, I was that old , I was battling to lay even one egg a week and by the looks of my plumage it looked as though I was in permanent “moult”! It’s alright for them. An egg pops out every day without any effort and their feathers are all glossy and look like silk with only the minimum of preening needed. Their legs are smooth and slim, swelling out to beautiful drumsticks that seem to go all the way up to their… well all the way up to their feathers. Yes, my legs are thick and scaly and when I do lay eggs, the shells are thin and fragile and often break. However, that’s what getting old is like. I think it’s about time I sat these youngsters down and explained to them that I was young once, have experienced love and haven’t spent my entire life here At Out “N” About eggs .I confronted them and made them sit down and keep their beaks shut and I started… To Be Continued.
Till next time, Freeda.

JUST LOOK at these beauties.
The reason for only 6 eggs in the carton as they cannot fit side by side to put in 12. Yes, they are big. We cannot guarantee that they each have a double yolk but they might do. We have an abundant supply coming from our new hens. These can be yours for $5.00 a carton. That is less than $1.00 an egg and you might get two yolks. Those of you lucky enough to drive past our egg shed can pick them up for nearly half the RRP.
