Little Yellow Farmhouse

Little Yellow Farmhouse Welcome! Watch as we navigate growing and tending to our 7.5 acre hobby farm. Why the Little Yellow Farmhouse? Stay tuned for that pic!

We’re Rikki and Nicole (plus Honey the Beagle, Nike the kelpie x, Tim the German shepherd plus recent additions Nibbles, Fro Vincent van Goat and Gary the goats and seven chickens: Chickpea, Kookaburra, Jenny, Jelly(bean) and Jack(uranda)), Lizzie and Jazzy and just purchased 7 acres including a modest 3 bedroom cottage (that’s how the real estate agent described it) outside of Brisbane. The plan

is to tidy the home up and set up a little hobby farm with cows, goats, chickens, bees and a variety of fruit trees. Inspired by the yellow kitchen benchtops and cupboard handles, we decided to paint the house exterior a cheery and memorable Dandelion Yellow.

Installed the privacy screens to secure the dog area under the house today. 🐶

Like every project there were dramas. Aside from missing parts, the gate supplied is the wrong size (1110W) from what was ordered (1200W) and the supplier had no intention of rectifying.

We headed to Stratco this morning with the gate gap problem that they didn’t create and despite being Christmas Eve they helped us find a solution - two x 1000W gates cut down to fit the gap. Stay tuned for that install.

Concrete floor is now painted in a lovely Windspray colour with a bit of grit for anti-slip.

Will be a gorgeous space til the dogs move back in 😂

Wasted a chunk of the day stuck in holiday traffic to collect the missing parts from our delivery but at least we can now get on with installing the privacy screens.

Another weekend and yet another project. We waited months for the house raise to be signed off, only for the engineer to push back on the deck - not safe. Which was accurate since the posts weren’t even welded to the deck as per plan.

This time last year the builder was in a grumpy mood making the deck structurally sound in time for Xmas Day. Then months waiting for official sign off.

This year we’re waiting on Bunnings to deliver foilboard so a different builder can finish the insulated roof and downlights. Can’t paint the ceiling or set up the deck til that’s finished.

In the meantime, we moved onto pulling apart the temporary dog area so we could paint the posts and beams under the deck (so it looks like a house and not a construction zone), clean and paint the concrete floor and install the privacy screens that will look nice and contain and shelter the dogs.

✅ Painting is done underneath - smashed out 8hrs on Saturday and up again with paint brush in hand at 5:30am Sunday for another 7.5 hrs.
✅ Cleaned the concrete and primed 2 coats Sunday arvo.
✅ Rikki and the kids installed 2x privacy screens before halting due to missing parts.

QA seems to be a real issue in the trade industry
- first, a builder who went to sign off without having the posts welded to the house, right sized posts installed, bolts on properly
- second, decorative screens produced with holes in the wrong places so we couldn’t easily join them
- and now, privacy screens with missing posts and other parts so we can’t finish the weekend job.

Anyway… the dogs and cats had an easier weekend. Lounging like sloths… 🦥 l

Busy weekend:

🐕 Prepared 3 weeks of dog food for our Nike and Monty - just makes life easier when their meds and meals are prepped. Nike has old man pains and Monty’s seizures are pretty under control at the moment

🍸 Urban Cocktail Trail for some while others were shearing sheep with a professional 🐑

🐏 Our ram went off to spend the holidays with the neighbour’s girls

🔨 Installed another gate on the dog yard

👨‍🔧 Painted more posts in the dog yard (these posts are never ending since the house was raised) and installed our beautiful signage - the couriers should have no problems finding us now!

🐶 And the pups had fun cooling off in the dam or relaxing in their favourite spots

Nicole and I just got home from an awesome 2 week get away to Japan.

We started at Nara (Nicole had a work conference), then Kyoto (walking cycling tours around shrines, temples and beautiful parks and sites).

Well our holiday to Japan is well and truly over! As soon as we arrived home, I spent about 5 hours mowing, trimmed a few goats feet, gave Gary the Goat and M&M the ram hair cuts.

Set up a new chicken (extended) areas and we just moved the chicks we incubated in with rooster Grey so he has an extended flock to manage from tomorrow morning).

We loved Japan - Nara (deer), Kyoto (history), Hakone (peaceful hikes) and Tokyo (hustle and bustle). The food and experience was amazing across every city.

Not a bad effort from the girls. This is 3 days worth and look at all those colours!!
