Gatha Muga (also known as Gathe Mangal or Ghantakarna Chaturdashi) is an ancient traditional festival celebrated by the Newar community in the Kathmandu Valley. It falls on the 14th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Shrawan (July–August) to chase away evil spirits, cleanse homes, and mark the official start of the valley’s festive season.

Key Traditions and RitualsMaking the Effigy: Locals construct straw and reed effigies representing the mythical demon Ghantakarna, placing them at major crossroads and street intersections.

The Mock Funeral: By evening, the straw monster is dragged through the streets in a noisy, jeering mock funeral procession

Burning and Disposal: The effigy is taken to a nearby riverbank or open field, set on fire, and thrown into the water, symbolizing the ultimate triumph of good over evil.

Home Purification: After the burning, household members clean their living spaces, drive iron nails into doorframes for protection, and wear protective copper rings (*lha sa) blessed by temple priests.
