Did you know?

German schools stop in the middle of the morning so that everybody can eat a piece of bread.

It is called the Pausenbrot, the break bread, and it is made at home. Dark bread, butter, a slice of cheese or sausage, cut in half and wrapped, with an apple and a bottle of water beside it. It goes in a small plastic box or an old tin.

At around half past nine the lesson stops, the boxes come out, and then everybody goes outside whatever the weather.

There is no cafeteria in most German schools and no hot lunch, because the school day traditionally ends around one and the proper meal happens at home afterwards. So this is the only thing you eat there, and it matters.

Every German adult can tell you what was in theirs and which child always had something better.

American schools did it differently, with a tray, a line and a lady with a scoop.
