🔥 Homemade Honey BBQ Char Siu (Cantonese Roast Pork) 🔥
We’ve been making this the traditional way – juicy, slightly caramelised, and full of flavour. Here’s how you can do it at home 👇
1. Choose the right cut
Best with pork shoulder (or pork belly if you prefer it fattier).
Marinate overnight with:
Char siu sauce, rose wine, five spice powder, oyster sauce, soy sauce, sugar, salt, chicken powder, fermented bean curd, a pinch of baking soda, sesame oil, garlic, spring onion, ginger, white pepper, and a bit of starch.
Mix well and refrigerate overnight.
2. Before roasting
Remove garlic, ginger, and spring onion from the meat.
3. Roast
Preheat oven.
Bake at 200°C for 25 mins → flip → another 25 mins.
(Adjust depending on your oven and thickness of meat)
Brush marinade during roasting (you can mix in a bit of honey).
4. Glaze
Melt maltose with a little water on low heat until thick and bubbly.
Coat the pork evenly.
5. Finish roasting
Put back in oven, slightly higher heat, about 5 mins each side (top rack works best).
6. Serve
Let it rest slightly, slice, and plate.
Heat leftover marinade until boiling and drizzle on top.
