Siblings’ sweet strawberry season is well underway
"IT STANDS for Seven Successful Siblings," Toan Dang said.
SSS Strawberries has kicked off this year's harvest with better capacity in its packing shed - all the better to haul in 40 tonnes of strawberries this week, 150 a week at its peak.
The Dang family are set to celebrate their tenth anniversary in October, having built up the business from seven siblings and 200,000 strawberry plants to up to 100 employees, and 2.2 million plants.
Their property on the corner of Rosedale and Gin Gin Rd spans 84 acres and they lease another 40 next door.
Berry lovers will be able to pick their own harvest from next month.
The recent wet weather hasn't phased the growers. "(If rain is forecast) we pick a day early," Toan said.
The packing shed was a hive of activity yesterday with a mix of backpackers and locals sorting and packing strawberries.
A new conveyor belt and shelving has boosted the shed's capacity from 70 workers to 100.
"A customer came through recently and said 'Wow'. He remembered us selling strawberries from a van on the side of the road," Toan's wife Gina said.
Their early sheds didn't even have lights. "We had to pack late at night, so we would park the car and shine the headlight into the shed," Toan said.
"Now we have three sheds and packing facilities. We've grown a lot."
