Spent the day out in the bush 🌿🍄

There’s nothing better than slowing down, getting off track, and finding your own food out there. Season’s starting to wake up and it’s always a good feeling bringing something home from the wild.

Not everything out there is edible though, always do your research especially with Amanitas before picking or eating anything.

Poison hemlock (Conium maculatum) is one of those plants that looks delicate and beautiful… but is actually extremely deadly.

It’s a tall plant in the carrot family with clusters of small white flowers arranged in umbrella-shaped umbels. One of the easiest ways to recognise it is the smooth green stems covered in purple or reddish blotches. It’s also a fairly common w**d in Tasmania.
Despite its harmless appearance, every part of the plant is highly toxic to people and animals. Historically, it’s the plant that was used to execute the Greek philosopher Socrates in 399 BC, who was sentenced to drink a preparation made from it.

If you’re removing it, take care when handling it. Wear gloves, long sleeves and eye protection, avoid getting sap on your skin, and never burn the plant as the smoke can be dangerous.

A good reminder that some of the most beautiful plants can also be some of the most dangerous. 🌿
