"I was excited to tick off a classic Canterbury multi-day hike. In some ways it was a return to where I had already been, having walked half of it earlier in the year from Waiau Pass and having ridden a pony on the banks of the Ada River on a pony club trek when I was 9 or 10.

I imagined the huts to be full to the brim and the trail to be thick with walkers. It was a beautiful weekend in mid December but everyone must have been busy with pre-Christmas plans as, instead, I faced my first night alone in a hut and met very few on the track.

Hut bagging enthusiasts love this track with 9 separate huts to collect, ranging from historic to modern. The highlight for me was the horses, and after clocking 10 hours on my feet from Boyle Flat to Christopher Hut, seeing so many grazing the river flats was a delight.

Perhaps the best view of the trail was seeing my car safely in the Lewis Pass carpark, though - this carpark has an unfortunate reputation for vandalism."

Coconut milk, curry, chicken, cashews and rice, ready in ten minutes flat. One hiker told us it's the best curry they've had that didn't come out of a restaurant, and honestly, after a big day out, that's a fair call.

This meal's been through a fair few packaging changes over the years!

The idea behind it goes back further than the brand itself, back to Southland, New Zealand, in the 1960s, when the Alliance Freezing Company pioneered freeze-drying food to solve a genuine problem: how to carry proper nutrition without the weight.

Legendary sailor Sir Peter Blake relied on that same freeze-drying technology during the Whitbread Round the World Race, and the New Zealand Army adopted it too.

"Darius, Max, and I were itching to get out into the mountains after a recent snow dump occurred in April, with reports of up to 1.5m of fresh snow to be found.

We planned to head up the Tasman Glacier and stay in Tasman Saddle Hut. We started our trek early at about 0500am from the Tasman Valley carpark. We managed to get to the ball shelter in great time, allowing us ample time to try to find a route down Garbage Gully.

The last time I was here was in 2023 after walking out from Plateau Hut. This time, the gully appeared to be much worse than previously, with large sections being washed out.

We tried to find an alternative gully to try to get down to the moraine, but alas, there was no ideal route down without putting ourselves at risk of getting hit by rocks on the way down. We subsequently brainstormed alternative places to go and decided to go with plan B.

We headed up towards Caroline Hut to try to have a bit of fun in the fresh snow. We headed up the ridge from the ball shelter and walked toward Caroline Hut. There was plenty of snow coverage from about 1500m and above. A bit of knee-deep snow plugging later, the hut was in reach.

We set up the tent and settled in for the night before an early start the next morning to do some mixed climbing. We found a rock band on the Eastern aspect of the ridge to hide from the gale westerlies and set up an anchor and found some interesting lines to head up.

After a few pitches, we headed back near the hut to practice our crevasse rescue technique with multiple scenarios to practice our on-the-fly rope work. After some fun with the ropes, we settled in for the night and woke up for a cruisy walkout from the ridge and jogged out of the valley back to the car. Just in time for a warm pie for the ride home."
