🍞 Who decides what gets added to our food?

From the end of 2026, most non-wholemeal wheat flour sold in the UK will be fortified with folic acid to help reduce neural tube defects such as spina bifida.

Public health experts estimate the policy could prevent around 200 affected pregnancies each year, particularly because many pregnancies are unplanned and women may not already be taking folic acid supplements.

But a new feature in Wicked Leeks asks an important question: while the public health benefits are widely recognised, what are the wider implications of adding a synthetic nutrient to a staple food consumed by almost everyone?

The article explores concerns raised by some practitioners about individual differences in folate metabolism, the balance between wholefood nutrition and fortification, and whether population-wide interventions should replace efforts to improve dietary quality.

At the Biodynamic Association, we believe this discussion raises fundamental questions about the future of our food system.

Should public health rely primarily on fortifying processed foods, or should we also invest in farming systems that produce naturally nutrient-dense food from healthy, living soils?

This isn't a simple debate, but it's an important one. We encourage everyone to read the article and consider the wider question:

Who should decide what is added to our food—and what kind of food system do we want to build?

Hi folks, I'm still shadow banned, still unable to promote any upcoming workshops we're running* and still under review from for no known reason.

Which is all very super boring and inspires much banging of the head on the walls.

And while a popular hack is to post a thirst trap to break the algorithm, my daughter almost disowned me for my previous "revealing" post where I was trying to do just that.

So, is this photo attention-worthy? Who knows?! But I do know that People Have The Power, and that when we choose to we can collectively do pretty much anything.

* Including helping us promote our upcoming 2 week Permaculture Design Course, Oct 4th - 16th in Hobart 🙂. Find it here https://goodlifepermaculture.com.au/product/permaculture-design-course-oct-4th-16th/ . Pretty please. Thanks.

So yeah, if you could please:
1. comment if you see this,
2. share it if you reckon having more people skilled in permaculture design to help create a good life for all is worthwhile, and
3. lastly, crack on with building community, voting to benefit future generations & managing your money ethically, that'd be tops.

A BIG week planting 1300 trees along Chaffin Creek. We are revegetating the riparian areas, this will rehydrate the landscape, build soil and provide habitat for wildlife.

We had neighbours, friends, volunteers and contractors, all working together to make this happen.

Ben spent his last few days at the farm helping plant these trees. His spirit living though his impact on the land and our hearts .verdeserte

Thank You for setting us up to care for country ❤️

A massive Thank You to for his time at Chaffin Creek Farm. What an adventure. In a time of many moving parts, he gifted his beautiful energy and shared it with us and the land.

This video is about his time spent with us, what he learnt and the connections he made.

Thank You Otis, you remain part of us and us part of you.

Otis was with us for 2 weeks. It felt like longer and offered him a transition time between big life moves.

The time of the phone, connecting with the land and Ben, was a beautiful experience for him.

We said goodbye to Ben this week. We love him dearly and will see him soon. Everyone that came to the farm had the joy of experiencing Ben, he gave us so much, he changed us as people and made us better humans. Ben was with us for over a year .verdeserte

Lots of love to you both and Thank You

A massive Thank You to ❤️ Caring For Catchment! We have achieved so much with your support.

We have delivered all workshops, planted way more than required (we have more to plant), removed lantana across at least 50 acres.

We have connected with neighbours, friends, future workshop facilitators, volunteers and community.

It has helped us grow in ways we have not identified. Thank You
