What has happened?
The end of the day where we scored an amazing fall of 52mm of rain. Not as much as other properties, but this combined over the last 17 days has given us a total of 113mm. The grass is slowly returning, and the landscape is turning a shade of green.

Cold and overcast days lately. Who knew we are in the 2nd month of spring?

Some sleepy babies making the most of the stalky leftovers from the sorghum stubble and some helpers today...although none of the would open the gates. All happy to sit and watch.

New bale feels. The boys love it when they get a new bale. A quick scruff, followed by an explosion of hay and dust.

Not the view from the kitchen window we were expecting this morning. Normally checking for new calves.

Ebony Winter W152 was to be 1 of 3 almost 12 month old heifers to be broken in for our hopeful return to the 2027 show season. A heifer who had a lot of potential and future within our herd as a breeder. She had a beautiful temperament, sound in her structure, and longer in her length than the other 2 heifers. Very much like her sweet Dam, Leedar Summer Rain.

We don't believe it was a snake bite. She may have laid down and became cast as where she laid she was facing slightly downhill. Although no sign of a struggle as if she was trying to right herself. She may have choked on some sorghum stubble. All we know is that she was fit and healthy at feeding time yesterday

Desire Red Peron (RC) has had her calf (14/09/2026), a sweet but very energetic little heifer. The question now for this calf is, will she be a black or a black who is a red carrier.
Peron's last heifer calf, Ebony Tiara (aka Daisy), is a red carrier. She has calved every year, although we do not always DNA the bulls/steers.

What the sunset picture doesn't show is the lack of winter crops planted on the floodplains. Only a handful of winter crops planted this winter.

Will we have another red calf or 2 this season?
Leedar Perfect Light and Desire Red Peron are both red carriers and have been joined with Ebony Rising Sun (Zac), also a red carrier. In 2025, we were surprised with our first red calf out of Peron. A case of forgetfulness.
This time round, we knowingly joined these cows and Zac. With genetics, you just never know.....it could go either way.

We have welcomed home Ebony Uptown Girl. And we are so happy to have her return. She has just weaned her first calf and is now drying off. She has grown into a beautiful cow, and she will be joined to a bull in the coming weeks. Secretly wanting to go back to where she was as there was way more grass, but we think she remembers home.
