An interesting way to look at things in your own breeding program...
We have always looked for balance and not extremes...

SELECT AGAINST, NOT FOR
Nature doesn’t reward extremes—it rewards balance.
Selection is often more about what you breed away from than what you breed for.
Don’t select for maximum growth.
Select against animals that cannot grow efficiently on your environment.
Don’t select for low calving weight.
Select against excessively large calves.
Don’t select for the highest milk production.
Select against cows that cannot wean decent calves
Don’t select for backfat.
Select against animals with inadequate fat.
Don’t select for large frame.
Select against animals that require more feed than your veld can provide.
Nature doesn’t reward extremes—it rewards balance.
The most profitable cow is seldom the one with the highest EBVs. It’s the one that survives, breeds back every year, and raises a good calf under the same conditions where her daughters will have to perform.
Perhaps the best breeding question isn’t, “What should I add?” but rather, “What should I eliminate?”
