In the past, we have been lucky to know directly and indirectly the great restaurants of France and their chefs who together, with the Sommelier involve themselves in the search

for great wines and great spirits. As often is the case for wine, great spirits are made and raised by small producers, imparting personality and diversity to the end product. We have gained access to their products which are in all good restaurants and bars in France, who do not carry many commercials, and for many years now, we are supplying them to the good restaurants and bars of Australia, who know us well. Accordingly in Australia the great majority of good restaurants, a fairly large gastronomic elite, relish their authenticity of age and maturation, the specificity of characters related to precise origin, their astonishing and lasting beauty compared to commercial stereotypes. A Cognac house with a single malt accent.

Méry Melrose sits in the heart of Grande Ch*****ne, running the same estate spirit through two very different categories.

The story starts with a marriage: François Méry, from Salles-d'Angles, and Janis Melrose, from Scotland. Their wh**ky takes its name from the Auld Alliance, the 1295 treaty between France and Scotland. Organic barley, a Charentais still, and a finish in old Pineau des Charentes casks bring the Cognac tradition into the wh**ky glass.

Yes, it's pronounced like b**r.

In 1866, Simon Violet and a pharmacist friend in Thuir combined cinchona bark with a red w**e and mistelle base, chasing something new. By 1935, it was France's leading aperitif, moving 35 million litres a year.

Dark cherry, bitter orange peel, cocoa and warm spice, over a firm quinine backbone. Good over ice, stretched with tonic, or standing in for vermouth in a Negroni.

Meet Château Arton, the single-estate house reviving Haut-Armagnac, the rarest of Armagnac's three appellations. Every grape is grown, every w**e made, and every Armagnac distilled on the same 88-hectare estate in Gascony.

Run by the Montal-Montesquiou family, descendants of the real d'Artagnan, since 1991. Three expressions have landed:

🥃 La Réserve - soft and floral with camomile and candied citrus
🥃 La Flamme - a single-vintage cuvée with vanilla, brioche and cherry
🍐 Poire eau de vie - made from Passe-Crassane pear, picked just before the first frost

Smoky dried chilli meets grape and nutmeg on the nose, then an intense heat rolls through before settling into something sweeter. Not your average pepper hit, it's balanced enough to actually work behind a bar.

Born in Paris, 1846. Dubonnet was created to help French Foreign Legion troops swallow their daily dose of quinine, wrapped in w**e, herbs and spices. 🍷

It went on to become the late Queen Elizabeth II's favourite tipple, enjoyed as a simple mix of gin and Dubonnet over ice with a slice of lemon.

Nearly 180 years later, it's still rich, slightly bitter, and endlessly mixable. Try it the royal way, or top it with soda for something lighter.
