Water is the most abundant compound on the earth's surface, covering over 70% of the planet. However, only 3% of the water on earth is fresh water. Of this 3%, 68.7% is trapped in glaciers and 30% of fresh water is in the ground. This leaves only 1.3% of the earth’s fresh water supply accessible for humans to consume. The increasing amount of pollution and toxins on the earth’s surface means that most of this water needs to be treated in some way prior to safe consumption.
