Formerly Barrington River Organic Farm

Formerly Barrington River Organic Farm It is bordered by the Barrington River which flows down from the Barrington Tops - an unspoilt wilderness covering more than 1,200 sq km of land.

Nestled in the pristine foothills of the Barrington Ranges, NSW, our Biodynamic farm is 250 acres of lush pasture and fertile soil beside the Barrington River, with Devon cattle, olive trees, garlic, black walnut trees and a small orchard. The property known as “Barridge” was purchased by husband and wife Jan and Lesley Goroncy in 1999.

“We fell in love with the property because of the beautiful

Barrington River, the views over the Barrington Valley to the Bucketts and the fact that it had not seen any pesticides or herbicides. We also liked the fact that there was no home on it, as we wanted to build one using our design ideas and we wanted to be self-sufficient.”

“Our vision is that Barridge be a place of beauty, and a healthy environment for both animals and plants, where like-minded people can share all that the farm has to offer.”

The farm is located 19 km from the townships of Gloucester and Barrington and is an approximate three hour drive north of Sydney.

The First Certified Ecological Farming System Wasn’t Organic

It’s not a competition — but it is history.

In 1924, Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner delivered a series of agricultural lectures to farmers concerned about declining soil fertility, reduced seed vitality and animal health.

He didn’t propose a new fertiliser.
💡 He reframed the farm.

🤓 Steiner described the farm as a self-contained living organism — integrating soil, plants, animals and people into a coherent biological whole. These lectures took place at the very beginning of agriculture’s chemical expansion, following the development of synthetic nitrogen fertilisers in the early 20th century.

✅️ By 1928, this approach was formalised under the name Demeter International — now widely recognised as the world’s first ecological certification system. Demeter established defined production standards covering composting practices, livestock integration, biodiversity requirements and on-farm fertility generation. Today, it operates in more than 60 countries.

Why this matters:

• Closed nutrient cycles — fertility largely generated within the farm system
• Soil biology centrality — humus formation and microbial life prioritised
• Whole-farm ecology — agriculture understood as a biological system

🤓 Modern organic agriculture emerged as a formalised movement slightly later (1930s–40s), influenced by multiple thinkers including Sir Albert Howard and Lady Eve Balfour.

Organic standards focus primarily on the exclusion of synthetic fertilisers and pesticides. Biodynamics includes this, and also places additional emphasis on whole-farm integration, and resilience.

Nearly a century later, we speak of “regenerative agriculture” and “soil health.”

💡 The underlying insight, as described by biodynamics, remains consistent: a farm is a biological system.

Newcastle Airport's win reflects its major terminal expansion and sustainability leadership. The new international terminal delivered record passenger growth, new domestic and international routes, and a $12.7 billion economic impact projection over 20 years.
It also became Australia's first terminal to earn a 5-Star Green Star rating and reached Airport Carbon Accreditation Level 4+—net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions six years ahead of target.
