First real syntropic line of mixed species into the dam forest area. 20m row with Persimmons as the first target crop. Excited to see how it develops!

The agroforestry site at the dam is the amazing picture, a lot of these trees struggled through summer 2025 as they were planted from pots into soil which was then inundated for over a month. This year they accessed enough subsurface moisture to keep growing rapidly through 9 weeks of summer heat with no rain, then got inundated again with 350mm of rain in a week, but now have the resilience of a broad root system that can carry oxygen, so they are going to power through autumn. We will start next summer with a great canopy and be able to expand planting uphill from the relative comfort of a young forest! In another year we can run the sheep through and really speed up soil development...

It has been a great test of our tree selections, everything has continued to grow like crazy in the high temperatures and humidity (apart from the grasses which have been variable).
The dam went from empty to overflowing rapidly in 36 hours!
Next big test of our tree selections will be the growth over Autumn and impacts of frost...

The soil here is now wet down to the bedrock and the worms are taking full advantage of the thousands of woody compost piles we've built. After 30mm of rain this week planting has begun on roughly 2000 new trees and we can finally put a shovel in with no effort. Here's to an early start to Spring and a magic season!!

This area had about 10cm of 'topsoil' over hard clay on a slope until we did some partial terracing with logs and a few thousand newspapers in bundles, then brought in about 20 cubic metres of cow manure over more branches and logs. About 5 years later and we're utilising 10m lemon gums to continue composting. In Spring we will install several dozen Eucalyptus cineria as a long term foliage crop in a deeper forest soil. Pruning should then be easy and ongoing, adding to berms and piles of compost with occasional additions of pelletised chook manure until it's no longer necessary....

Getting a lot of amazing tree growth around the place which means we are rapidly gathering compost. The fig orchard is offering a great opportunity for propagation and expansion and we are always finding new ways to store and infiltrate our rainwater. Another beautiful wet and humid summer!
