MORE KIDS WITH BETTER B.C.S.
Our post on 30/12/21 charted Body Condition Scores in a doe mob before joining, scored by Dr Gordon Refshauge of NSW DPI. Preg scanning was on 1/4/22 and Gordon has computed the results below. Does with better BCS at joining averaged much higher preg and scan (twinning) rates. Preg rate was 50% at BCS of 2 and ca 100% at BCS of 4. Twinning rate was 100-150% at BCS of 2-3, rising to over 200% at BCS of 4. Kidding is under way.

WORMS & MORE WORMS - WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT THEM?
It’s a very bad year for goat parasites in eastern Australia. QUESTION : What can you do to reduce your pain, costs and losses? Is genetic worm resistance real? ANSWER : This chart gives the answer - it ranks the actual, individual worm egg counts on 80 young bucks from the Dudauman 2021 drop, bred, born and raised together as a single ‘management group’. They all look healthy with no scours or deaths – the only obvious symptoms are chalky coats and reduced growth rates. The best (most resistant) ones are carrying and shedding less than 200 eggs per gram (not worth drenching); the wormiest ones are over 3000 epg. As they are all treated identically, the difference is primarily genetic. The EBVs, which we will get shortly from Kidplan, will sort out which ones will throw the most worm-resistant progeny. CONCLUSION : There’s no magic bullet, but the right bucks can save you a lot of pain and cost. (BTW, our compliments to Stockwatch, Temora NSW, for excellent analytical work. And a quick reminder for new breeders : resistance of worms to drenches is a totally different issue; and so is worm resilience.)

BODY CONDITION SCORE CONT'D. Lots of interest in NSWDPI's work on BCS so here are the expert scores done by Gordon Refshauge. This is a mob of purebred does in very good condition but not fat, pictured previously. They mostly scored 2.25 to 3.5. The few over 4.0 were mostly failed breeders this season; those at 2.0 or less were slow to wean September kids. Our dorper ewes in the same good health would probably score a whole point higher. A nice run of F2's might be a point lower, perhaps? We'll soon see how BCS relates to fertility and kid survival.

BODY CONDITION SCORING IS GOING DIGITAL
BCS can help to improve mating, nutrition, reproduction and profit results in sheep and goat enterprises but is difficult to do accurately and repeatably. Dr Gordon Refshauge and his team from NSWDPI were at Dudauman Park on Thursday, trialling their prototype digital BCS scoring device on does prior to mating. It's called Score4Sure - you can google for it. [BTW the does (pictured below) were mostly 2.5 to 3.5 score with a few fattys at 4 and lactations or foot abcesses at 1.5 to 2.0. We'll see how that relates to preg rates.]

SHOPPING FOR A HIGH PERFORMING RAM (or BUCK)
" ....factor in what you can and can’t see"

"MLA General Manager, Michael Crowley, said visual and structural assessments of potential sires remain vitally important, and using genetic selection tools including Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBVs) is just as critical."

“Shopping for a high-performing sire involves factoring in what you can and can’t see,” Mr Crowley said.
“Hard to measure traits such as fertility and eating quality require tools such as breeding values to help make progress in improving profitability.”

“This means creating a shortlist of high performing sires that meet your targeted breeding outcomes using objective selection, then on sale day, choosing sires from that shortlist that meet your physical assessments and budget,” Michael said.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT BUCKS FOR A JOB …..

….. is very difficult to do visually, however expert you are, particularly from a big line-up of similar animals. And there are invisible genetic types that suit some purposes and are unfavorable to others, so using bucks without genetic progeny testing data is one of the biggest risks to herd development, turn-off and profitability.

Dudauman bucks come with data on structure, growth, muscling, reproduction and worm resistance to help with that choice. To illustrate, we have posted information on seven example bucks from the line-up that will be for sale at St George on Tuesday 19th October. To see what these could and couldn’t do for your herd, please visit https://dudaumanpark.com. Data on the rest will be available early in October.

Feedback is welcome. BTW, the bucks pictured here are 15 months old.

BGBAA ELECTION : WHO SHOULD DUDAUMAN PARK VOTE FOR?
It’s great to see sensible younger people prepared to stand for election. But sadly, the conversation so far has been about governance, personalities and politics. What we are actually interested in, as commercial seedstock producers, is how the association could improve the breed, its performance, its adaptation to Australia, and its acceptance in commercial circles. So we would be interested to hear from prospective directors (or incumbents) what policies they would argue for in regard to improving :
• productive performance and genetics
• structural conformation and classification
• integrity of pedigrees
• the role of ‘purebreds’ and ‘upgrades’; and
• the relationship of Reds, Kalaharis and Standards.
Incidentally, we will be voting against approval of the directors reports for the reasons set out by Bruce Mackenzie and because it is the only way we have of protesting about the narrow and non-commercial policies adopted by the association under successive boards.
