The origins of the Dance of the Huehues are believed to be pre-Hispanic, and the dance has since been adapted and influenced by Spanish colonial and Catholic traditions. The dance is seen as a way to celebrate life, honor ancestors, and mock death, as the old age represented by the dancers' costumes is often associated with the concept of death and rebirth in Mexican culture.
