☀️🐴 Hot Weather Reminder for Tomorrow

Tomorrow is expected to reach around 35°C, with strong sun and very hot conditions. Please make sure your horses are prepared for the heat.

A few things to keep in mind:

* If your horse needs sun protection, please have a suitable summer rug / sun protection rug ready. Make sure it is lightweight and breathable.
* Please consider using a fly mask and insect repellent, especially for horses with sensitive eyes or those bothered by flies.
* Try to avoid heavy exercise or training during the hottest part of the day.
* Please check your horse’s water trough. Horses may drink much more in hot weather, so if you notice the water level dropping unusually fast or the trough is not refilling properly, please let me know straight away.
* If you would like to shower your horse to cool them down, please message me beforehand so I can make sure the horse shower water is available.
* Please make sure your horse has access to enough shade during the hottest part of the day.
* If your horse is prone to summer itch or rubbing, please prepare early with appropriate insect protection and care, rather than waiting until the rubbing becomes severe.
* Please also make sure your horse has enough feed and access to salt, especially during hot weather.

If you notice your horse showing signs of heat stress, such as excessive sweating, rapid breathing, unusual tiredness, reluctance to move, or generally looking unwell, please act early and contact a vet if needed.

If you notice any issues tomorrow with water, shade, shelters or other facilities, please feel free to message me anytime.

☀️🐴 Summer Preparation Reminder

With a strong El Niño developing this year, we may be facing a hotter and drier summer than usual. Before the really hot weather arrives, it’s a good idea for everyone to start preparing their horses for the warmer months.

☀️ Sun protection and hot weather

If your horse is sensitive to the sun or prone to sunburn, please make sure you have a suitable summer rug or lightweight sun protection rug ready.

On very hot days, it is also best to avoid heavy exercise or training during the hottest part of the day.

🪰 Flies, insects and eye protection

As the weather gets warmer, flies and other insects will become more active.

Please consider preparing fly spray, a fly mask and, if needed, a fly rug.

A fly mask can also help protect your horse’s eyes from flies, dust, grass seeds and other irritation.

If you notice redness, swelling, excessive tearing or your horse rubbing its eyes, please check it early rather than waiting for the problem to get worse.

💧 Drinking water

We will continue to do our best to make sure there is plenty of drinking water available throughout summer.

If you notice that the water level in your horse’s trough is dropping much faster than usual, or continues to drop over several days, please message me so I can check the water supply.

On very hot days, horses may naturally drink much more than usual, so a noticeable drop in water level over one day can be completely normal.

🚿 Horse showers

If you would like to shower your horse during hot weather, please send me a message beforehand so I can make sure water is available for the horse shower.

🌳 Shade

Please keep an eye on the shade available in your horse’s paddock and whether your horse is able to rest comfortably during the hottest part of the day.

If your horse has any particular shade requirements, please let me know in advance and we can discuss the best option.

🌿 Summer itch and rubbing

If your horse is prone to Queensland itch, summer skin irritation, or has a habit of rubbing on trees, fences, posts or shelters, please let me know before it becomes a problem.

It is much better to prepare early with insect control and appropriate care rather than waiting until the horse is already extremely itchy.

If your horse regularly rubs heavily against shelters, please make sure I know about it in advance. Strong or repeated rubbing can damage shelters and may also cause injury to the horse.

🌾 Dry weather and grass availability

If we experience prolonged hot and dry weather, the property may enter the usual seasonal period where fresh grass becomes limited.

We will rotate paddocks where possible to give the pasture time to recover, but during prolonged heat and drought we cannot guarantee that every paddock will continue to have plenty of fresh grass.

Please make sure your horse always has enough hay, feed or other suitable food available and do not rely entirely on paddock grass during dry periods.

🚗 Please prepare food before going away

If you are going away, travelling, or know that you will not be able to come to the property for several days, please make sure your horse has enough food prepared in advance.

If you need us to help feed your horse, please contact me beforehand so we can arrange the feeding dates, amount and food.

Please try not to leave this until the last minute or until your horse is already running short of food.

🔥 Extreme heat and high fire danger

If we experience extreme heat, strong winds or high fire danger conditions, I will update everyone if there is anything specific that needs attention at the property.

Summer management usually requires a little more preparation and communication, so if your horse has any special summer needs, or if you notice any issues with water, fencing, shade or other facilities, please feel free to message me.

A few friendly reminders for everyone using the agistment facilities 😊

I’m always very happy to see owners spending time caring for their horses — trimming hooves, grooming, washing, training and so on. That’s exactly what we want to see.

At the same time, there are a few things I’d really appreciate everyone helping with so we can keep the property clean, safe and pleasant for everyone.

1. Please take horse hair, hoof trimmings and all rubbish with you

If you trim your horse’s hooves or groom out a large amount of hair, please collect it and take it home with you.

Hoof trimmings are extremely hard and can damage the mower blades when I mow the paddocks.

A few naturally shed hairs here and there are obviously not a problem, but large amounts of grooming hair left on the ground can wrap around the mower shaft. It can cause the mower to jam, overheat, damage the bearings or even break the shaft.

The same applies to all other rubbish, including baling twine, feed bags, packaging, bottles and anything else brought onto the property.

We don’t have rubbish collection facilities here, so please take your own rubbish home with you.

2. Please let me know when you finish using the wash bay

After washing your horse, please send me a quick message to let me know you have finished so I can shut off the main water supply.

This has happened twice now where I thought someone was still using the wash bay, but they had already turned off the hose and left.

The wash bay is supplied by town water and the pressure is quite high. The hose and fittings are not designed to stay under that level of pressure for long periods, and we have already had fittings or pipes fail because of this.

So even a simple message saying, “Finished with the wash bay” is really helpful.

3. Please reset the Training Area after use

Recently I’ve found the Training Area gate left open, mounting blocks left in the middle of the area, chairs moved around and equipment not returned to where it belongs.

This isn’t really about anyone’s personal habits. The Training Area is a shared facility for everyone, so it needs to be left ready for the next person to use.

If you move something, please put it back.
If you open the gate, please close it.
If you use equipment, please return it to where it belongs.

Over time, we will also be installing cameras around some common areas of the property.

The purpose is not to monitor anyone. It is mainly for everyone’s safety and to provide a clear record if something happens.

If there is ever an accident, damage, an issue involving a horse, or any disagreement about what happened, having footage can help us understand the situation clearly and avoid unnecessary disputes.

It also gives horse owners, horses and the property an extra level of protection if an unexpected incident occurs.

I really don’t want to create lots of policies, rules, fines or restrictions around using the Training Area and other shared facilities. I don’t think that’s necessary.

I’d much rather keep things simple and trust everyone to look after the property, respect the shared facilities and leave things in good condition for the next person.

The goal is simply to keep Wonderwander a clean, safe and pleasant environment that everyone can enjoy.

We’ve recently built a small special-care area at Wonderwander Agistment for horses that may need:

* weight management
* more careful grass intake
* extra management due to laminitis risk

The area is approximately 8m × 8m, so it is intentionally quite small and designed for more controlled management rather than normal grazing.

Under the shelter, we’ve installed rubber matting to provide a flatter, softer and cleaner area for the horse to stand and rest. The grass in this area will also be trimmed regularly to help keep it short and reduce unrestricted access to fresh grass.

This area is available for horses that genuinely need this type of management. If you think your horse may benefit from it, please contact me to discuss using the area.

One important thing I want to emphasise is that weight management or laminitis risk does not mean a horse should be left hungry.

Horses still need appropriate forage and regular access to food. Management can include things such as low-sugar hay, slow feeders, controlled portions, compressed forage products, or other suitable feeding methods that allow the horse to eat more slowly over a longer period of time.

Any horse using this area must still have enough suitable food available and should never be left without forage for long periods simply because its grass intake needs to be restricted.

The goal of this area is not to starve horses — it is to provide a safer and more controlled environment while still making sure they are properly fed and cared for.

Ps: The smaller size is intentional — it helps limit excessive movement and naturally reduces access to fresh pasture, while owners can still provide appropriate low-sugar forage so the horse is not left hungry.

A few important reminders and updates for everyone at Wonderwander Agistment 🐴🌿

1. Training Area

The training area is a shared space for everyone to use. If you move any poles, stools, equipment or other items while using the area, please put them back where they were when you finish.

In the past, the kids and I have often put things back when we noticed them left out, but ideally, whoever uses or moves something should return it afterwards. This helps keep the area tidy, safe and ready for the next person to use. Thank you! 😊

2. Feeding Containers & Feed Storage

Most horse owners have always had their own feeding containers here. If you don’t have one and need something suitable, please feel free to message me.

There are also some feeding containers provided by the property. Everyone is welcome to use them, but please keep them on the property and tie them to a post when they are not being used so they don’t blow away in strong winds.

Please don’t store feed, hay or feeding equipment directly on the grass, and please avoid placing feed directly on the grass when preparing meals. You can use a trailer, bucket/container, pallet, tarp or another suitable barrier to keep feed and storage items off the ground.

Any feed stored on the property also needs to be properly covered and securely closed.

We can get very strong winds here, so loose lids, bags or covers can easily blow away, and pellets or grain can be scattered across the paddock. If you are using a lid, please make sure it is secured — even placing something heavy on top can help. If you are using a tarp or fabric cover, please tie it down securely with rope or straps.

It is also important that horses cannot easily access stored feed. Occasionally a horse may get loose or escape from a paddock and go looking for food. Horses can be very good at lifting lids or pulling covers off, which can result in feed being eaten or scattered everywhere.

Please make sure any feed you leave on the property is stored responsibly, covered and secured against both the weather and curious horses. 😊

3. Optional Feeding Service

Wonderwander is a DIY agistment property, and our normal agistment fee does not include additional horse-care services.

We’ve always encouraged owners to come regularly and look after their own horses, and we still believe that is the best arrangement wherever possible.

However, we understand that sometimes work, family commitments or other circumstances make it difficult to get here. Because quite a few owners have asked about feeding help, we do have a separate feeding service and price list available.

At this stage, feeding is the only additional service we are offering. If you occasionally or regularly need help with feeding, just send me a message and I can send you the price list.

4. Rich Spring Grass, Weight Management & Laminitis Risk 🌱🐴

Recently I’ve had quite a few conversations with owners about rich new grass, weight management and laminitis risk.

The fresh grass growing at the moment can be very rich, and some horses are much more sensitive to high-sugar pasture than others. For horses that need their grass intake managed, there are a few practical options owners may wish to consider:

• Temporary fencing / smaller grazing areas
Temporary electric fencing can be used to restrict a horse to a smaller area and reduce access to large amounts of fresh, rich grass.

• Slow-feed hay nets with suitable low-sugar hay
Providing enough suitable hay in slow-feed nets can keep horses occupied for longer. If they have something appropriate to nibble on steadily, they may spend less time actively seeking out fresh grass.

• Suitable low-sugar compressed forage blocks
Some compressed forage products take horses much longer to chew and work through, which can also help keep them occupied. If using these, please make sure the product is suitable for your horse and check the sugar/starch content.

These ideas can be useful not only for horses at risk of laminitis or needing to lose weight, but also as part of longer-term pasture and feeding management.

Every horse is different, so owners can choose what works best for their own horse. If your horse already has laminitis, is showing hoof soreness, or has a known metabolic condition, please seek advice from your vet and/or farrier rather than relying on pasture management alone.

5. Organic Farm Registration 🌱

Our organic farm registration is currently under review. As we work through the process, I may occasionally need to communicate a little more with everyone about small details such as feed storage, what is placed on the ground, paddock management and general property practices.

Please don’t think I’m trying to make things difficult or being overly fussy. 😊 Some of these little things are becoming more important as we improve the property and work towards the organic requirements.

Ultimately, every improvement we make comes back to creating a cleaner, safer and better environment for the horses.

Keeping the horses safe, happy and comfortable here is something we all share as a goal. 🐴💚

Recently, a couple of horse owners have spoken with me about their horses having laminitis, and we’ve had some useful conversations about ways to reduce access to very rich fresh grass.

I thought I’d share a few of the ideas we discussed, as they may also be helpful for other owners managing horses that are sensitive to rich pasture, prone to laminitis, or needing to lose some weight.

At the moment, the fresh grass is growing quickly and can be very rich, so there are a few practical options owners may wish to consider:

• Temporary fencing / smaller grazing areas
Temporary electric fencing can be used to create a smaller area and limit how much fresh grass the horse can access.

• Slow-feed hay nets with suitable low-sugar hay
A large slow-feed net filled with suitable low-sugar hay can give the horse something to steadily nibble on for a much longer period. If the horse feels there is always food available in that area, it may spend more time focused on the hay rather than constantly seeking out the fresh grass.

• Low-sugar compressed forage blocks
There are also compressed forage blocks that take horses much longer to chew and work through. These can help keep a horse occupied for longer and may reduce the amount of time it spends searching for fresh grass. Just make sure the product you choose is suitable for your horse and low in sugar/starch.

These ideas can be useful not only for horses with laminitis concerns, but also for horses needing weight management and for longer-term feeding and pasture management.

Every horse is different, so owners can choose what works best for their own horse and situation. If your horse has laminitis or another medical condition, please also follow the advice of your vet and/or farrier.

Just sharing a few practical ideas from recent conversations in case they are useful to anyone else. 🐴🌿

A little update 🐴🌿

At the moment, we only have a few single paddocks and double paddocks available. We currently don’t have any larger paddocks available.

We also don’t plan to fill every paddock on the property. We prefer to keep a few paddocks available for rotation, so horses can be moved when needed and the grass has time to rest and regrow.

Over the past few days, we’ve been continuing with property maintenance, including:

* repairing shelters and fencing
* gradually filling and repairing potholes along the internal roads
* ongoing w**d management
* regular manure collection and paddock clean-up

⚠️ Windy Weather Reminder

Hi everyone, with the strong winds today, please make sure your horses are rugged appropriately to keep them warm, and please secure any feed buckets, hay, feed bags or other loose items so they don’t blow away.

With winds this strong, it can also be difficult and unsafe for us to work outside for long periods.

If you notice any problems at all, please feel free to message me anytime — big or small, please don’t worry about disturbing me. I’ll keep every issue in mind and, depending on the situation and weather conditions, I’ll come and deal with it as soon as I safely can.

🐴 Is Wonderwander Agistment the right fit for you and your horse?

Every agistment property is different, and no single setup will suit every horse.

Wonderwander Agistment is a DIY agistment offering mainly private paddocks and plenty of flexibility for owners. We believe it’s important to be open about both the advantages and limitations of our setup, so owners can decide whether it is genuinely the right environment for their horse.

🌿 Horses and owners who may be well suited to Wonderwander

• Horses that are less confident or get pushed around in shared paddocks
Some horses are naturally quieter and may be bullied or pushed away from feed in a herd environment. A private paddock allows them to eat and rest without competing with more dominant horses.

• Horses that enjoy having company nearby, but prefer their own space
Many horses don’t enjoy being completely isolated, but don’t necessarily need to share a paddock either. Most of our paddocks are next to other horses, allowing them to see and hear their neighbours while still having their own space.

• Horses that are familiar with and respectful of electric fencing
Our paddocks mainly use electric fencing, so horses that are already comfortable with electric fencing generally settle in well.

• Quiet, settled horses, including retired and older horses
Our environment can be particularly suitable for horses that enjoy a quieter lifestyle and don’t require intensive training facilities.

• Horses that benefit from being fed separately
One of the advantages of a private paddock is that owners can feed their horse without worrying about another horse stealing or competing for its hay, feed or supplements. It also makes it much easier to know exactly what your horse is eating.

• Owners who want the freedom to visit and care for their horse at any time
As a DIY agistment, we don’t have restricted visiting hours. Owners can come to check, feed and spend time with their horse whenever it suits their schedule.

• Owners who prefer to manage their horse’s feeding themselves
You can choose your own hay, feed and supplements and adjust them according to your horse’s age, condition, workload and individual needs, without paying additional routine feeding or management fees.

• Owners who enjoy spending time with their horse
Subject to safety and consideration for other agistees, owners are welcome to ride around the property, lead their horses for a walk, do some everyday training, or simply come and spend time with them.

• Owners who are happy to adjust feeding according to pasture conditions and their horse’s needs
Natural pasture changes throughout the year depending on weather, season and paddock use. Owners who regularly observe their horse and supplement with sufficient hay or feed when required are generally a good fit for our DIY setup.

⚠️ When Wonderwander may not be the right fit

• Stallions / entire males
We currently do not accept stallions.

• Horses that regularly challenge, run through, jump or escape fencing
As our paddocks mainly use electric fencing, horses with an established habit of challenging or escaping fences may present a higher safety risk.

• Horses with severe separation anxiety
If a horse becomes extremely distressed when separated from another horse — for example, repeatedly galloping the fence line, attempting to escape or becoming difficult to settle — a private paddock setup may not be the best environment for them.

• Horses with significant destructive chewing or rubbing habits
Occasional chewing or rubbing is understandable. However, horses that repeatedly and significantly damage fencing, gates, shelters or other facilities may not be suitable for our property.

• Horses with high feeding requirements where the owner is unable to provide sufficient supplementary feed
Agistment does not include unlimited hay or feed. The natural pasture available in a paddock should be considered part of a horse’s overall food supply, rather than its only source of food.

Owners are responsible for providing enough forage and feed to meet their individual horse’s needs.

Even when an owner visits regularly, if a horse remains noticeably hungry, constantly searches for food, rapidly grazes the available pasture down, or begins losing condition, this may indicate that additional hay or feed is required.

• Owners who are unable to check and care for their horse regularly and have no alternative care arrangements
DIY agistment means owners remain responsible for their horse’s routine checks, feeding and general care. If regular visits aren’t possible and no reliable alternative arrangements can be made, a full-care agistment may be a better option.

• Horses requiring significant daily care that the owner cannot provide themselves
For example, horses requiring frequent medication, wound care, specialised feeding, regular rug changes or other ongoing hands-on management may be better suited to a full-care facility if the owner cannot provide this care themselves.

❤️ Why do we share this?

Because we don’t believe that more horses automatically means a better agistment.

Every horse has a different personality, routine and level of care, and every owner has different expectations and circumstances.

We would much rather help owners understand our setup from the beginning and make an informed decision than have a horse move in and later discover that the environment isn’t right for them.
