Deep dive into Australia’s best Saperavi
2025 Mallee Estate ‘Kãti Ãllo Saperavi
Heley, Donaghey, and Déak selected this among their standout six selections in the blind tasting. Heley found pure flavour focus: “This w**e is all about the flavour – a riot of blackberry bramble, cream, and vanilla. Flavour intensity continues to build on the palate. It’s delicious and highly slurpable – very likely to appeal to newbies, as it has all the yummy aspects without the sometimes-intense structural elements.” Donaghey embraced the approachability: “Bright red hue. Not every w**e needs to be serious, and that’s where w**es like this step in. Lovely and approachable nose of curry leaf and curry powder, followed by beetroot and slight inky bloodiness. But the palate is juicy, jubey, joyful, jubilant and jovial – a slight fruit sweetness brings tannin and acidity into equilibrium. The most approachable saperavi I’ve seen. Give your nan a glass – she’ll love it, and so will you.” Déak appreciated the easygoing charm: “Very fruit-forward – blackberry, black plums, blueberry. Really nice and approachable, with soft mild tannins and slight sweetness. It might not be as concentrated as the rest, but it possesses an easygoing, upfront charm.”
