The ups and downs of organic veggie gardening. Our brassica season usually comes to a sudden end as soon as the weather warms due to pest pressure from the diamondback moth. While only 10mm in size it can wreak havoc with most brassicas like kale and broccoli. It can be depressing watching your nearly ready crop become unsaleable in a matter of days. On the other hand the leeks have performed very well, with very few pests. Who would be a market gardener? 😀

Growing in season has its challenges because each year the conditions change. Our dry winter has resulted in above average temperatures which has been an advantage for some veggies, but not all. We aim to have all our Brassicas done by the end of September to minimise damage by the cabbage and diamondback moths. Fingers crossed.

Greg’s Good Dirt Ep 4: Broadfork vs Roebuck Fork 🍴

EDIT: Oops. Greg meant 760 mm width garden beds, not cm. 😬

Broadforking loosens and aerates soil without disturbing the layers of the soil. We used it here to prep our beds for carrot seeds.

Greg shows us the traditional Broadfork and a newer version of that, the Roebuck fork by Roebuck Farm .

We were very excited to pick up our new crate label. Every crate of produce that leaves our farm must have one of these attached. The label identifies our farm name, where we are and who we are certified with. Our farm has its own, unique certification number. This is confirmation that our produce has been grown to a set of national standards for organic/biodynamic produce.

We are audited annually and have to provide evidence that we have met all of the standards. Terms like “spray free” and “grown using organic principles” can be interpreted in many different ways. No accountability is required to use these descriptions.

Seven Hills Organic Farm is proud to be able to use the Demeter logo on our produce.
