Zebra 🦓 Easter Egger appreciation post:
All of our heritage birds have gone dormant laying eggs, Winter is a time to rejuvenate, focus on good food, muddy feet and supporting little bodies to recover from the fertile season, and bulk up.
But the little squad of around 8 zebra Easter eggers that I’ve kept for our flock, have kept us fed throughout winter. 🍳
I have kept and tested a few lines, but have found a specific type of Hyline bird, or my old Red Barn line of Aracuana and Marans girls are producing the most fantastic colours, size and frequency of eggs.
They aren’t all perfect, it’s a mixed bag of colours: some of my eggs are mossy, pale green, olive, blue or speckled - they’re all different. But they’re reliable, and a good
standard size (Hyline egg pictured below for comparison).
I’m now the 4th year into this line, and the choices for the Zebra Easter eggers are really clear.
When breeding season rolls around for us, I can’t wait to produce a huge flock of these brilliant little layers.
