Excuse me while we fan-girl over our Akers-line Gold Sebrights.
We’re lucky enough to have a very handsome looking pen, and are excited to continue working with this wild, quirky and rather hilarious breed.

It’s been an interesting few weeks spending time with the cockrels and choosing Pony’s successors (I’ve learnt my lesson keeping only one rockstar roo.)
I have three handsome Ponyboy cockrels that will pair up with their ladies next breeding season. Here’s one of the more mature boys (white tag)
For now, they’ll enjoy the bachelor pen to mature more through spring before they’re introduced to their new jobs.

Can’t wait to see how they go with fertility this season, I’ll make some time to snap their little Roo 😍 he’s lovely, and the perfect mini sized gentleman.

How cute are those darker little pullet eggs? These darker little googies came from the pony line MillieFleur pullets - laying like crazy in the mixed ladies pen, where I have some 2 and 3yo girls, also starting to lay (lighter eggs for comparison).

While it might be tempting to hatch from these eggs - here’s why we won’t be hatching or selling MillieFleur this coming season: they’re too young.
Yes, they’ll be fertile, but hatching pullet eggs (the first eggs laid by young hens under a year old) often yield smaller, weaker chicks. These eggs have lower nutrient density, less space for the developing embryo, and thinner shells, which significantly reduce hatch rates and chick survival.

So, while the MillieFleur pullets grow out this year - looking fantastic in their paddock… we’ll be looking to our more mature hens for fertile eggs, once they’re laying, and fertility is tested.
I’m anticipating hatching my own and selling:
🐣 Silver MillieFleur
🐣 White
🐣 Easter and Olive eggers
Stay tuned!

I had a bit of fun today snapping some of the girls in the MillieFleur grow out. These pullets won’t breed this season, but they’re looking very promising.
Love these Pony girls 🖤🤎🤍

This past breeding season we didn’t sell one fertile egg. It was a slow start, test hatches were awful (on usually virile pens) and it just wasn’t working out, so I rested the birds, focused on nutrition and hatched a few for myself.
I’d let numbers dwindle in my breeding stock and I sadly lost my breeding trio, including Pony, who was around 5yo (and the best lil rooster I’ve owned.)
Somehow, luckily I had eggs incubating and had a few more eggs put aside to eat.
They quickly went under a broody, and months later… what’s left of my Pony genetics is growing out nicely.
Porcelains and rich reds despite the split colour. I’ve got my pick of boys growing out in a bachelor pen as well - a lucky season. So we’ll be slow returning to MF eggs for sale, but once they’ve matured into nice little hens, proven they’re throwing good chicks, we’ll try again.
For now - enjoy a cute muddy shoot with the mixed pullet pen… showing some promise.

It’s a while since we had Sebrights on the property, but we’ve been very lucky to get a hold of some young silver and gold genes from a very reputable breeder 🙏
They’re only bubs, so it’ll be a while off to see what they breed, but we’re so excited to have a handful of silver and gold birds to play with.

It’s been a late hatching season for our birds this year - with some cute arrivals today 🐣 from very vocal Deborah… who has taken up swearing at me like an absolute sailor when I dare to show my face.
She’s one of our better lavender cuckoo ladies, who has decided she would rather go broody than lay 🤷🏻‍♀️

While I would like to build the flock with her genetics, I’m absolutely not game to give her career advice.
