Welcome once again.
This week is a cow appreciation post. Our cows are vital to restoring soil health, creating a resilient ecosystem and increasing biodiversity here on our farm. The correct management of cow’s results in greater environmental benefits than impacts. The role of our cows is to eat, trample, fertilise and move. This perfectly timed dance results in a mutualistic interaction between soil and animal, perfected by nature for billions of years.
Ghinni Ghi Farms is proud to be home to 10 registered dexter cows. Each cow, is unique, named and extremely friendly. We selected the dexter breed due to their small stature, excellent mothering, and their dual-purpose ability to produce both rich creamy milk, and high quality tender meat. This breed originated in Ireland in the 18th century, however due to importation restriction, Dexter cattle are now classified as endangered. We love this little breed and through selective breeding we hope to grow, provide, and educate the community about this hardy, unique, little breed.

Apologies for the delay. This week has been exhausting and extremely hectic. The rain has been a welcome relief with over 120ml in the last three days. However, the rain has brought extreme heat, humidity and muddy ground. The grass is flourishing, and the animals are loving the fresh green pick. Hoping you are all safe and well and enjoying the rain as much as us here on the farm.

Welcome to this week’s farm catch-up.
So exciting news, our second and third litters have hit the ground. We were lucky enough to witness the birth of these little cuties.
The Large Black is a heritage breed of domestic pig imported to Australia in the early 1900s. It is the only British pig that is entirely black, and no the meat is not black. Their colouring enabled them to withstand the hot Australian summers and avoid sunburn. This breed has been recognised for their superior milking, mothering abilities and succulent, tasty meat due to the slow growth rate.
This wonderful breed suits our free-range animal philosophy, whilst also working our paddocks to reduce our w**d burden and fertilise the land.
Unfortunately, the trend towards intensive farming favouring fast growing, bacon type, white pigs led to a rapid decline in the Large Black breed. As a result, this breed has now been placed on the 'critical' list by rare breeds organisations all over the world. In Australia, there are estimated to be only sixty registered breeding sows left in existence.
Ghinni Ghi farms currently have two.
Enjoy our babies and see you next week.

Meet the farmers behind Ghinni Ghi Farms

Ghinni Ghi Farms was formed in 2021 when Phoebe and I chose to reinvent ourselves and improve our way of life. Our initial plan was to achieve self-sufficiency and produce 95% of what we consume. With that in mind we set about planning and restructuring an old pig and dairy farm located in a beautiful valley of the Scenic Rim Qld, that had been heavily cropped and was in state of disrepair. Rehabilitating the farmland was a priority in achieving our goals and, a lot of time was spent educating ourselves in biodynamic, regenerative and organic farming principles. Whilst not currently certified, we firmly believe in the ideals of these concepts and have witnessed first-hand the positive results that have occurred. The original homestead 1903c was revitalised along with the land to 3 years on, achieving a vibrant abundant landscape that supports horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, chickens and a market garden. Our farm has also expanded to producing a wide array of market garden vegetables, eggs, pasture to plate meats, and sourdough to the local markets. It has been a tough, challenging adventure; however, we now welcome you on our journey and look forward to sharing some of our lives on the next stages of Ghinni Ghi Farms
