History
‘Trefusis’ was purchased by my Grandfather Alec McEwan in 1922 and ran a superfine merino flock of 5000 sheep and 70 cattle. My parents Jim & Jo McEwan took over managing the property in 1948 and proceeded to develop ‘Trefusis’ over the next 60 years to the point where it ran 22,000 Merinos and X-bred and 500 Hereford cattle. The Merino Stud was formed in 1965 to secure supplies of Stud and Flock Rams for the properties own use.
Over the last 6 decades ‘Trefusis’ has proven consistently to be a stable force within the wool industry, by topping wool sales on numerous occasions and winning many Zegna Trophy awards.
Trefusis today consists of some 17,380 acres (7036 Hectares) after additional purchases of ‘Black Johnnies’ and ‘Kheme’ in 1989. The topography of Trefusis consists of rolling to mountainous country with improved, semi improved and Native bush country.
It has a long frontage to the Macquarie River and the soil profile varies from brown clay loam to some lighter sandy country.
Over the last 70 years or so the pastures have been continually improved and have a significant fertilizer history. The annual rainfall is approximately 480 to 500ml.
