Ninety-one w**es. Three days of blind judging. One Best in Show.

The 2026 Liquid Luxury W**e Show results are in, and congratulations to Darren J Read who has now taken out Best in Show twice, first with a Muscat in 2024, now with a Topaque scoring 97/100. Not an easy thing to do well across two very different styles.

Ever wondered how the world's great fortified w**es stay consistent, year after year, decade after decade?

It's called a solera system. W**eries have used it for centuries to blend w**e of different ages together, and it's exactly how we build our own Muscat, Topaque and Tawny ranges at Stanton & Killeen.

Here's the good part. You don't need a professional w**ery to use it. A working version can be built at home with as few as two barrels, and it solves one of the most common frustrations home barrel owners run into: topping up with young w**e and watching your barrel's age go backwards instead of forwards.

Most people assume older automatically means better when it comes to fortified w**e. It's actually more complicated than that.

Young Muscat brings freshness, vibrant fruit and lifted florals. Old Muscat brings depth, concentration and complexity. On their own, each one is a little one-dimensional. Blend them together and you get something neither could achieve alone, layers, movement across the palate, a w**e with a beginning, a middle and a long finish.

That's why almost all great fortified w**e, including everything in the Rutherglen classification system, is a blend rather than a single vintage. We've written a full post on the blog about why blending wins most of the time and the rare occasions when a single vintage earns the right to stand alone.

One of those occasions is our Jack's Block Muscat, sourced from a single vineyard planted in 1921 that produces fruit unlike anything else on the estate. Our 2019 vintage is nearly sold out, and once it's gone, it's gone for good. The 2021 vintage will be the only Jack's Block available from here on.

We originally said Monday 27 July. But let's be honest, we all know barrel owners aren't exactly known for their patience.

So, without further ado, entries for the 2026 Liquid Luxury Amateur Fortified W**e Show are now open!! Five years running, and the standard keeps getting better every single year.

Four categories. Three classes each. And this year's Best in Show winner takes home a 10 litre barrel made from 50-year-old oak.

Most people who love Rutherglen fortified w**e have never ventured much beyond Muscat, Topaque and Tawny. Which makes sense, because those three styles are extraordinary.

But the fortified w**e world is considerably broader than that. From Australian Apera, which is essentially Sherry under a different name, to the great oxidative w**es of Jerez, the aged complexity of Tawny Port, and the extraordinary longevity of Madeira, there is a whole spectrum of styles worth knowing.

Understanding the bigger picture doesn't just make you more interesting at a dinner party. It also gives you a better sense of what your barrel is doing, why the styles you choose matter, and what else might be worth exploring alongside your existing blend.

Some of these mistakes are difficult to reverse. A barrel that's been filled with the wrong thing loses the aged character you've spent years building, and in some cases the wood itself is permanently affected.

Your barrel isn't just sitting in the shed over winter. It's working.
As the cold sets in here in Rutherglen (we're talking frosty mornings and nights below 2°C), the oak in your barrel actually contracts. That slows down oxygen exchange, slows evaporation and gives your w**e a quiet, undisturbed window to settle and integrate.

It's part of why some of the best tastings happen on a cold winter evening rather than in the middle of summer. The w**e isn't doing less. It's doing something different, and it's worth the wait.

Life gets busy. The barrel gets forgotten.
We hear from barrel owners regularly who haven't checked on their barrel in months. Sometimes longer. And the first thing we always tell them is: it's almost always fixable.

Fortified w**e has a significant advantage over table w**e in this situation. Its high alcohol and sugar content make it far more resistant to the spoilage organisms that cause problems in neglected barrels. That doesn't mean neglect is harmless, but it does mean you have more time than you think.

If your barrel has been sitting untouched, here's what to do. Smell it first. Then taste it. Check the ullage. Then decide whether to send a sample or go straight to SO2 and top up.
