From Adelaide to Iceland 🇮🇸
And of course, Joel found the bees 🐝
While visiting Friðheimar Tomato Farm in Iceland, we got to see some fluffy bumblebees! They’re not just cute; they’re essential to how the farm works.
Friðheimar grows tomatoes year-round in a greenhouse using geothermal energy, tapping into Iceland’s natural underground heat to create a warm, controlled environment, even in the middle of winter.
Inside these boxes are bumblebee colonies, brought in to pollinate the plants. They use a technique called “buzz pollination,” vibrating the flowers to release pollen; something we see from native bees in Australia too. In a place like Iceland, where the natural pollination season is short, this system makes all the difference.
It’s incredible to see how bees are supporting food production on the other side of the world - different climate, same vital role 🌏🐝🍅
