The Story ...
On Saturday 15 November, 2014, more than 50 people gathered at the Sandgate Bowls Club for a day of structured conversation on local/personal responses and ideas about some of the themes of the G20, inspired by short presentations from six extraordinary speakers. This 'OUR 20' event had no agenda other than providing a platform for local people to discuss matters important to them,
and everyone agreed the day was fruitful and positive. As a follow on, the OUR 20 organising group thought it would be interesting to 'continue the conversation' by providing a regular platform through 2015 (the first event is the 10th of February - with regular dates to be announced soon) allowing people to enter and leave the conversation over time, and perhaps for action to be generated from it. We would love to welcome the broadest and most diverse elements of our region, and for this first Long Table we'd especially love to hear from the creatives - whether that's expressed in the arts or other fields. (Do you know a creative scientist? Or a creative activist? Or perhaps a creative business person?)
The Long Table itself is inspired by a current and similar project at the Old Ambulance Station centre in Nambour, on the Sunshine Coast, where a community group (which includes two of our OUR 20 folk) has now run two of these events, also inspired by a community forum, and there's increasing interest and excitement about what is emerging, from a wide cross-section of people. The Ambo Long Table happens on the 16th of each month, no matter what day of the week, at 6pm (Feel free to drop in!)
So please feel free to invite people you know (or maybe only barely know) who you think may want to listen, learn, and in their turn contribute, to meet new people and make new connections, and join a creative network for creative change, creative support, and creative expression. And come along yourself! (And bring some food to share.) The topic for this first Long Table is SANDGATE AS A CREATIVE COMMUNITY. We might canvas questions like:
What is the value of creativity in a community? (We often think creativity has to do with arts and culture, but it can also be applied in science and technology, economics and politics, and even activism!) What IS creativity? What creative resources do we have in our region, and how might they be accessed and used to build a better community? Who are the players, and what are the key organisations? Can we join the dots and add value across the wonderful array of creative events we already enjoy throughout the year? What effect does our geography, natural ecology and climate have on our creativity? The shape of the evening is in the hands of participants, and experience is showing that connecting people can be achievement enough. No charge: but bring a dish to share - Licensed bar with profits donated to SANDBAG
