Wishing a very Happy Horsesā€™ Birthday to all of our equine friends today! Today is an extra special milestone as we celebrate the incredible Prophet Jewel turning 27! šŸ„³

As the dam of Champion Sire Proisir (and this yearā€™s Grosvenor winner) and Group 1 Caulfield Guineas winner Divine Prophet, her contribution to the thoroughbred industry is nothing short of legendary. But to us, she is simply a beloved member of the family.

Owned by wonderful long-time client Tony Falcone, Prophet Jewel has been in Vernaā€™s care since 2008. She might be 27, but if you saw her out in the paddock today, youā€™d never guess itā€”she still has plenty of her trademark quirks, dynamic personality, and youthful spark!

Alma Vale Thoroughbreds is delighted to announce the appointment of Darren Corbett as the operationā€™s new Assistant Stud Manager.

Bringing over two decades of global and local thoroughbred expertise to the role, Darren will oversee daily bloodstock operations, horse care, and support the continued growth of Alma Valeā€™s breeding and sales programs.

Darrenā€™s lifelong passion for the industry began in County Tipperary, Ireland, where his family is heavily involved in the National Hunt racing sector. Pivoting early from a potential jockey career to thoroughbred breeding, he gained foundational experience at respected Irish farms, including Ballyhimikin Stud, before honing his expertise with stallions and broodmares at The National Stud in England.

In 2011, Darren travelled to Australia for a yearling season at Vinery Stud, quickly falling in love with the Australian thoroughbred industry and lifestyle. He returned permanently in 2013 to serve as Foreman for Malua Racing in Victoria, before relocating to the Hunter Valley in 2014 to join Segenhoe Stud.

During an eight-year tenure at Segenhoe working under the guidance of Peter O'Brien, Darren mastered all facets of stud operationsā€”from foaling to yearling preparation. He helped prepare elite, top-tier performers including Joliestar, King's Legacy, Ellsberg, Merchant Navy, In Secret, and numerous million-dollar yearlings, developing an exceptional eye for yearling conformation and commercial presentation. Most recently, Darren spent four years as Assistant Manager at Kingstar Farm, where he focused heavily on mare reproduction, foal conformation, and farm management, playing a key role in raising the Group 1-winning two-year-old Devil Night.

"We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Darren to the Alma Vale family," said Verna Metcalfe, General Manager. "His extensive knowledge of all aspects of the industry, paired with his dedication to commercial excellence, aligns perfectly with our vision for the future. Away from the farm, Darren is a devoted husband and proud father of two, and we are equally excited to welcome him and his family to our local community."

Darren approaches his new position eager to leave his stamp on Alma Valeā€™s growing operation.
With this new appointment, Alma Vale also bids a fond farewell to Oscar Engelbrecht.

"We want to extend our sincerest thanks to Oscar for his hard work, dedication, and the significant contribution he has made to Alma Vale during his time with us," Verna Metcalfe added. "Oscar has been a valued member of the team, and we wish him the absolute best of luck in all his future endeavours."

Darren will officially commence his role on 3rd August 2026.
