SAIL ON BY (Elvstroem x Dangerous Seam 2006).
Here is a Willow Park graduate with a great story behind him! Sail On By doesn't carry the WP brand, but he was prepared and sold by our team for the 2008 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, where he was knocked down for $200,000 - the eighth highest priced yearling ever sold by his sire.
It turned out racing wasn't his forte, placing twice in four starts, but 13 years ago Sailor found his way to Abey Performance Horses and he has been a family member ever since! Lou and Sailor show jumped to 1.30m before going eventing, but right before his first 3* start as a 16yo, Sailor suffered an injury requiring surgery and a lengthy rehab.
Since recovering, Sailor has returned to show jumping and is now ridden by Lou's daughter, recently winning the Boneo OTT Carnival 1m Championship and Reserve Champion in the 1.05m at the Australian Interschools Championships representing Victoria. They also took out Best Performed OTT across the country for senior students, an incredible achievement!
Lou says Sailor could be a tricky ride early in his career, but he knows his job in the ring and just loves winning - so far as being sensible in a lap of honour as the winner, but trying to overtake everyone if he didn't win! Now 20 years old, Sailor has been an absolute superstar for the Abey family and is a wonderful example of what thoroughbreds can do after their racing career, right through to being a fantastic schoolmaster for a teenage rider at 20 years old.
