🌼 Livestock owners – keep an eye out for Dongara Daisy 🌼
Just a heads up for anyone running alpacas, sheep, cattle, horses or other livestock – Dongara Daisy (Osteospermum) isn’t just a roadside plant… it’s an invasive w**d that’s spreading quickly across the metro area and is now easy to spot along roadsides, verges, and creeping into paddocks.
⚠️ Why it matters:
• Can reduce available pasture, meaning less quality feed for your animals
• Potentially toxic if ingested, especially when feed is short
• May cause irritation or sensitivity in animals and people
• Spreads rapidly, particularly through disturbed ground, gateways, and fence lines
While many animals are selective grazers, when pasture is limited or they’re curious, they may still sample plants they normally wouldn’t.
✅ What to do:
• Remove plants before they go to seed
• Stay on top of high-traffic areas (gateways, feeders, fence lines)
• Don’t leave pulled plants where livestock can access them
• Maintain healthy pasture to reduce the risk of animals grazing w**ds
We’re seeing it pop up more and more, so it’s worth getting on top of it early 👍
Let’s keep our paddocks productive and our livestock safe 🦙🐑🐄🐎
