FAREWELL AND THANK YOU

Hello Friends.
Just a short post to let you know that Mount Roland Hazelnuts is no more.

Sadly, advancing age and ill-health have meant that we are no longer able to continue with the strenuous work involved in running the farm. Instead we are downsizing to a lovely old house on the north coast of Tasmania.

We want to say a huge thank you for your support over the past fifteen years! As Australia's only commercial scale certified-organic hazelnut growers, we have been greatly energised by our customers' appreciation of our hazelnuts. It has been a privilege to grow food for you!

A special big thanks to the lovely folk from the Kentish Garden Club, who have helped with our harvest for the last few years.

It’s been a wonderful journey, shared with so many amazing and beautiful people. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Very best wishes to you all,
Greg and Elizabeth.

Many people use sheep dogs to move their sheep to fresh grass. But we have the services of a sheep cat! Charlie the wonder cat (and his human, Greg) gently encourage our beautiful sheep to move at their own pace … Very stress-less for everyone 😊

Phew! After three weeks of hard work our 2023 Harvest is finished. Our biggest ever – two tonnes of beautiful organic hazelnuts!
A huge thank you to our helpers: the Kentish Garden Club, the Wilson family, Marion, Ross, and especially Geoff and our wonderful Dutch workers Jasper and Mellanie. Eli mainly focused on making us laugh … and eating quite a few nuts 😊

What a beautiful Spring evening in north-west Tasmania! We feel honoured again to have a gorgeous little mob of Wilti-poll (self-shedding) sheep helping us to keep the grass in check in our hazelnut orchards. Without these gentle, lovely creatures we would have to spend many hours mowing ...

Those of you not living in Tasmania are probably not aware that the north-west of our state suffered a highly destructive weather event on Sat-Sun, with wind gusts of up to 160 km/hr in places. A human life was lost, and many others severely disrupted.
Thankfully we are OK. We have just had our power restored after five days … trees and power lines were blocking the road into/out of the farm. Also many of our fences have been damaged by falling trees. A lot of chainsawing for Greg to do!
We are certain that many animals and birds have also lost their homes or have been killed.
A sad and devastating event!

The north orchard harvested! Now just the south orchard to do.
Huge thanks to our wonderful WWOOFERS from Sydney, Eva and Pip - we couldn't have done it without you!
Thanks also to Robert from Cygnet who put in many hours.
