Sclerotinia… one to keep an eye on in canola 🌼

Sclerotinia is one disease we’re keeping a watchful eye on as we move through the canola flowering period.

Sclerotinia stem rot can develop when wet conditions coincide with flowering, creating an environment that favours infection.

The disease can cause stem lesions, premature ripening and lodging, with the potential to impact yield.

👉🏼 The key is monitoring risk and being proactive.

We look at factors such as paddock history, crop canopy, weather conditions and flowering stage when assessing the likelihood of Sclerotinia developing.

Where fungicide is warranted, application timing is critical, with research supporting application around 20% bloom for main-stem protection.

🌼 Need advice on Sclerotinia management?

Our agronomists can help assess the risk and develop a crop protection strategy suited to your paddock.

🌾 Do you know what growth stage your wheat is at?

Dave gets into the wheat crop today to show us how to identify growth stage, what to look for as the flag leaf emerges, and why getting the timing right matters for crop protection.

The flag leaf is one of the most important leaves in the wheat canopy, contributing significantly to grain filling and yield. Protecting it, along with the other upper canopy leaves, through the critical stages of grain development is an important consideration in disease management.

Understanding growth stage allows us to make more informed decisions around disease monitoring and fungicide timing, rather than relying on the calendar alone.

Research identifies GS37-39, around flag leaf emergence, as key timing for fungicide decisions, as the upper leaves are exposed and can be protected when disease risk warrants treatment.

Growth staging gives us a clearer picture of where the crop is in its development, helping ensure crop protection decisions are based on the plant’s actual growth stage and the conditions in the paddock.

Flowering Canola? Keep watching… 🌱

As canola moves into flowering, Aerial Blackleg is an important disease risk to watch, particularly when flowering coincides with cool, wet conditions and airborne blackleg spores.

👉🏻 What is Aerial Blackleg?
Unlike Crown Canker, Aerial Blackleg affects plant tissue above the ground, with infection occurring on upper stems, branches, flowers and peduncles. Risk can increase when conditions are cool and wet during flowering, creating favourable conditions for infection.

👉🏻 How can we manage Aerial Blackleg?

Research has shown that a fungicide application around 20% bloom can reduce upper canopy blackleg infection.

However, the potential yield benefit can vary considerably between seasons and paddocks, so assessing disease risk and crop conditions is important.

Are you concerned about Blackleg risk in your flowering canola?

🐑🐄 Support a great local cause!

We’re proud to support the upcoming Lamb & Cattle Drive, with local farmers coming together to donate livestock and raise money for The Royal Children’s Hospital as part of the Devenish, Dookie & Districts Good Friday Appeal.

The Lamb & Sheep Auction and Cattle Auction will be held at the Shepparton Saleyards on Tuesday 13 October 2026.

We’ll be getting behind the cause by donating a bag of Super Fertiliser. Everyone who donates livestock will receive one entry per animal in the draw to win the bag. 🌱

If you’ve got some stock you’re able to donate, or know someone who might be interested in getting involved, we’d love to see as many local farmers as possible take part.

Every donation, big or small, helps make a difference.

To donate livestock, message the Devenish, Dookie & Districts Good Friday Appeal page or use the contact details on the flyer below. 👇

🐸🍄 One of these things is not like the other...

Both images were snapped by our agronomists during routine crop checks this season. One found over the fence, one in a customers crop.

- One's a pretty cool slime mould on crop residue. 📸
- One's a fungal disease in barley that can cost yield. 💰

Knowing the difference is why regular paddock walks matter. 🌾✅

Last month the APVMA handed down its decision on paraquat — an update we've all been waiting for.

Paraquat will continue to be available, but with new restrictions around application rates, equipment and handling requirements.

The regulator’s review found no clear evidence linking approved use to Parkinson’s disease, though this remains a topic of ongoing discussion.

👉 Reach out to our Agronomist's to talk through what this means for your cropping program.

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority concludes its nearly 30-year review of the controversial but popular herbicide.
