FINAL CALL FOR LIVESTOCK DONATIONS 🌱🐑

Next Tuesday 13th October, the Devenish, Dookie & Districts Good Friday Appeal is hosting its Lamb, Sheep & Cattle Drive at the Shepparton Saleyards, raising funds for the Royal Children’s Hospital and contributing to the 2027 Good Friday Appeal total.

If you’ve been thinking about donating livestock, now is the time to get in and support a fantastic local cause.

We’ll be doing our part too. Advanced Ag is donating 1,000kg of fertiliser, valued at $700, to one lucky livestock donor.

🚨 STOP! Don’t bale that hay just yet.

You’ve put the time into the crop… so it’s worth getting the final step right.

When hay looks dry on top, it can be tempting to get the baler moving. But what matters is what’s happening throughout the windrow, not just what you can see on the surface.

Baling before the crop has dried sufficiently can lock in excess moisture, increasing the risk of heating, mould and reduced feed quality.

Before you bale, take a closer look at the crop and check the moisture throughout the windrow. The right conditions can help protect the quality of the hay you’ve worked hard to produce.

A little patience in the paddock can save a lot of headaches down the track.

Don’t risk wasting a good crop… check the moisture before you bale.

Our agronomists Dave and Luke are out in the crop this afternoon, assessing how the wheat is tracking through this important growth stage.

With flag leaf merging underway, the crop is entering a key period for disease management and canopy protection.

The top three leaves are responsible for a significant volume of the plant’s grain fill, so keeping them healthy and photosynthetically active can make an important difference to final yield.

This is the time to monitor crops closely, assess disease risk and make timely decisions to protect the canopy that will support grain fill through to harvest.

ARMYWORM | Why early crop scouting matters 🌱🐛

Early-season crops can have more green leaf available, which means more opportunity for Armyworm to feed and cause damage.

If populations build unnoticed, they can quickly move through a crop and cause significant leaf loss, impacting yield potential.

Don’t just inspect your crop from the ute, get out into the paddock and look closely through the canopy.

Early detection gives you more time to assess the situation and decide whether management is needed.

The best way to stay ahead is simple: get out and scout.

Sclerotinia… one to keep an eye on in canola 🌼

Sclerotinia is one disease we’re keeping a watchful eye on as we move through the canola flowering period.

Sclerotinia stem rot can develop when wet conditions coincide with flowering, creating an environment that favours infection.

The disease can cause stem lesions, premature ripening and lodging, with the potential to impact yield.

👉🏼 The key is monitoring risk and being proactive.

We look at factors such as paddock history, crop canopy, weather conditions and flowering stage when assessing the likelihood of Sclerotinia developing.

Where fungicide is warranted, application timing is critical, with research supporting application around 20% bloom for main-stem protection.

🌾 Do you know what growth stage your wheat is at?

Dave gets into the wheat crop today to show us how to identify growth stage, what to look for as the flag leaf emerges, and why getting the timing right matters for crop protection.

The flag leaf is one of the most important leaves in the wheat canopy, contributing significantly to grain filling and yield. Protecting it, along with the other upper canopy leaves, through the critical stages of grain development is an important consideration in disease management.

Understanding growth stage allows us to make more informed decisions around disease monitoring and fungicide timing, rather than relying on the calendar alone.

Research identifies GS37-39, around flag leaf emergence, as key timing for fungicide decisions, as the upper leaves are exposed and can be protected when disease risk warrants treatment.

Growth staging gives us a clearer picture of where the crop is in its development, helping ensure crop protection decisions are based on the plant’s actual growth stage and the conditions in the paddock.

Flowering Canola? Keep watching… 🌱

As canola moves into flowering, Aerial Blackleg is an important disease risk to watch, particularly when flowering coincides with cool, wet conditions and airborne blackleg spores.

👉🏻 What is Aerial Blackleg?
Unlike Crown Canker, Aerial Blackleg affects plant tissue above the ground, with infection occurring on upper stems, branches, flowers and peduncles. Risk can increase when conditions are cool and wet during flowering, creating favourable conditions for infection.

👉🏻 How can we manage Aerial Blackleg?

Research has shown that a fungicide application around 20% bloom can reduce upper canopy blackleg infection.

However, the potential yield benefit can vary considerably between seasons and paddocks, so assessing disease risk and crop conditions is important.
