🚨 Spotted a speckled brown bug? Take a closer look.

The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) isn’t established in Australia and early detection is critical to keeping it that way.

BMSB is an exotic pest that feeds on a wide range of fruit and vegetable crops, including apples, pears, grapes, cherries and sweet corn. Feeding can damage produce and may also increase the risk of fungal and bacterial infections.

🔎 Where could you find it?
BMSB is an expert hitchhiker and can arrive in shipping containers, vehicles, machinery and even travellers’ luggage. During cooler weather, the bugs also seek sheltered places and may gather on or inside buildings.
If disturbed, they can release a distinctive and unpleasant odour.

Last weeks The Weekly Times shines a spotlight on a growing issue for Australian dairy farmers: visa processing delays that are leaving skilled workers stuck in the queue and farmers carrying the cost.

The changes under Ministerial Direction 119 have pushed many employer-sponsored agricultural workers further down the processing priority list, creating uncertainty for farms that have already invested heavily in recruiting skilled staff.

These are not theoretical impacts. Delays are increasing workload and pressure on farmers, their families and existing employees, while reducing confidence to invest and plan for the future.

📝 ADF's recent survey found the pipeline is backed up, with dozens of skilled workers awaiting visa outcomes across multiple agricultural visa pathways.

Our message to the Federal Government remains clear: restore priority processing for agricultural skilled visas, clear the existing backlog, and ensure industry is consulted before major migration changes are made.
