So we finally joined a hiking 🥾 group, we walked to a special memorial site to pay our respects to lieutenant Barnaby D. Davies from Australia. On 1 April 1945, a formation of six P-51 Mustang fighter planes left its airbase in Italy. They were a part of No. 3
Squadron of the Royal Australian Air Force and commanded by Australian flight lieutenant Barnaby D. Davies. Their mission was to destroy Germany’s military infrastructure in the occupied Slovenia/Yugoslavia. The team of the fighter aircraft included:
- Barnaby D. Davies with P-51 Mustang no. KH.851 (lead aircraft),
- Clark A. with P-51 Mustang no. KH.723,
- Taylor J. B. with P-51 Mustang no. KH.716,
- Redenbach I. M. with P-51 Mustang no. KH.632,
- Lane A. F. with P-51 Mustang no. KH.593,
- Martin P. J. with P-51 Mustang no. KH.677.
During one of the missions, Davies’ plane was shot down by the German army and it crashed in the village of Kuretno in Lasko. The flight lieutenant saved his life by jumping out of the damaged plane and using a parachute.
Patriotic Slovenes and partisans helped him survive and significantly contributed to his safe return home.
