Not every little lychee makes it to harvest!
If you look closely at the ground beneath our trees, you’ll see hundreds of tiny green lychees that have fallen off.
This is called fruit drop, and it’s a natural part of growing lychees!
After flowering, lychee trees can set far more fruit than they can carry through to harvest. Some of these tiny fruit will naturally drop, often because pollination or seed development hasn’t been successful.
But other factors can increase fruit drop, including:
💧 Water stress
☀️ Hot, dry weather
⛈️ High winds
🐛 Insect damage
🌱 Competition for nutrients and energy
In fact, some lychee varieties can naturally shed up to 90% of their developing fruit!.
It’s always a little heartbreaking seeing so many baby lychees on the ground, but the real question is how many will hang on until harvest! 🤞
