Big River Milk

Big River Milk Big River Milk is a division of Local Farm Fresh The farm had previously been 5 separate dairy farms and ceased operating as a dairy with deregulation in 2000.

About the farm

Big River Dairy commenced milking cows on 6th December 2008 having completed construction of a 36 Bale Rotary Dairy. The Farm Milks upto 250 Head with over 350 head on the farm. In 2013 Big River Milk was setup. The processing Facility and the Farm in 2015 was sold to Local Farm Fresh Pty Ltd who now run the processing and distribution. The Farm and Facility is 100% Australian Own

ed and Operated. Local Farm Fresh operate under the Brand Big River Milk

So Why Bottle our own Milk? There are many reasons in today’s economic environment one is that we cannot attain a reasonable price for our milk being controlled by the big manufacturers. The other reason is that the milk we drink today is a far cry from the old days when we could buy milk direct from the farm. It is our wish and desire to take people back in time again and provide the milk that you the customer deserves here on the North Coast of NSW. Our guarantee to the customer is:

“What the cow gives us, we give you”

What is the process at Big River Milk? The cows are milked twice a day in the rotary dairy and then stored in a milk vat at 4 degrees. It is then pumped across to the milk factory into another milk vat where it is stored until it is processed later in the morning. The milk is tested and recorded then goes through the process of pasteurization and homogenisation. It is then bottled and placed in the cool room ready for distribution by our delivery vehicles. The bottom line is that the processing that milk goes through on our farm is a simple as the process can be. The milk is as fresh as it can be. Big River Milk – No Added Products

As you would be aware there are a lot of gimmicks with some companies over the marketing of milk and whether or not there is any permeate or other products added to the milk. Here at Big River Milk we guarantee to you that there is nothing added to or removed from our milk. We guarantee you the customer:

“What the cow give us, we give you”

The Products

Non Homogenised Full Cream Milk (with Yellow Cap)

Big River Full Cream Milk will be pasteurized to remove any bacteria from the milk by heating it to a minimum of 72.6 degrees and retaining that temperature for a minimum of 15 seconds – and then bottled to give you the old fashioned product where the cream will rise to the top enabling you to again experience scooping the cream off the top of the bottle or shaking the bottle to mix the cream back through the milk. Most milk today undergoes a process called homogenisation which pulverizes the fat molecules under high pressure making them that small you cannot see them in the milk in the form of cream. Big River Milk premium line of milk is not homogenized and is not modified in any form giving you the customer a real milk taste. This milk is idea for coffee shops for frothing and cooking uses at home for the making of yoghurt and cheese due to the milk having all its natural properties. Available in 1 and 2 litre bottles. Also available in 750ml Glass Bottles. Homogenised Full Cream Milk (with Green Cap)

This is a full cream milk that has been pasteurized and homogenised. This milk has nothing added or removed from it and still gives you the real taste of milk but without the cream separating in it. Low Fat Milk (with Red Cap)

Big River Milk Low Fat Milk combines the health benefits of a reduced fat milk but retains a delicious milk flavor. Big River Milk Low Fat Milk with only 1% fat is the perfect milk for the health conscious adult who enjoys taste in their milk. This product has no added milk solids but has the cream separated from the milk and is pasteurized and homogenised giving you the real taste of milk from the farm without the fat contents in the milk. Available in 1 and 2 litre bottles

MILK UPDATE 🐄

Last week, Mrs Pepe, Georgia and Kat visited the farm to spend time with the farmers and see the milking process up close 🧑‍🌾

The herd of 300+ cows is a mixed breed herd, including Holstein Friesian and Jersey cows.

On the walk in from the paddocks to be milked, the cows cross a local road, something the locals know to plan around. Travellers, however, sometimes find themselves waiting a little while… because here, the cows always have right of way.

Dear Valued Customer

We regret to announce the closure of our business Big River Milk.

The mounting bills, unprecedented drought and dry has made it impossible for us to continue. We are selling milk below the cost of production and it just doesn’t work.

Our last deliveries will be Friday or Saturday the 6 th and 7 th December. We will understand if you have other arrangements before this date, please just let us know.

This is not something we want to do and we have been trying to make things work for months and praying for rain, but somewhere enough is enough.

We greatly appreciate the trust you have given us in supplying the quality product you need.
If by some chance you know of someone who may be interested in taking over the milk business it’s not too late to discuss it. But for now we have to close the factory down and the farm is another issue.

I will try to call as many as I can but feel free to call me if you like.
Again we are sorry to cause this disruption to your business and I hope in good faith we can rely on everyone to settle our account as soon as you can. This will ensure we can look after our workers and keep feeding the cows we have left.

Kind Regards
Barry Paff
