Now I’m certainly guilty, as might be a few others, of accusing the wagyu cow of not exactly being the best of mothers, so we figured we’d better share some positivity when it arises.
This first calf heifer (w042) lost her calf last week, we tried to save it, but couldn’t. The little calf with her is an F1, who we also tried hard to save his mum but unfortunately lost her the following day.
We had young calves in the yards overnight on Thursday night, and W042 walked all the way to yards in hope her calf might be there alive. The look on her face as every calf the next morning walked past her to their mothers was so hopeful, and the lost, desperate look at the end, when the last calf walked past was heartbreak.
We thought she looked desperate enough she might just take the little orphan, and by simply putting the orphan in a yard with her for a couple of hours, she was in the paddock running around after him the next day- absolutely no help from us at all.
Shout out to the maternal strength Bar H Wagyu, where the heifer was bred. TF148, 40/1 and Haruki 2 all feature in her pedigree.
