Those words were meant to shrink me. Used as a weapon in the middle of a late-night shift in Dubai, they were meant to remind me of where I came from—a boy raised in the to***co fields of Ilocos Norte, breaking his back under a punishing sun, just hoping one day to work in a room with air conditioning.

To the world, a server is often a background character—a nameless hand hovering over a white tablecloth. But behind the apron was a man navigating a silent storm of ambition, survival, and a drive to build a better future for his family.

I didn’t let those words diminish me; I used them as fuel.
