Last week I grabbed a Cherry Ripe for a nostalgic little treat⊠and immediately did a double take. Had I actually grabbed a mini version?! It turns out Cadbury have quietly reduced the size from 52g to 44g.
Why? Theyâre pointing to the Australian Governmentâs Healthy Food Partnership targetsâas if a smaller portion makes a chocolate bar âhealthier.â
Câmon Cadbury⊠youâre a confectionery company! Letâs be honest:
This isnât about healthâitâs about profit margin and a little trick called shrinkflation.
This is when a product gets smaller, but the price doesnât. Itâs everywhere right now, especially in chocolate.
One of the biggest reasons for this is the cost of cacao.
Every Soulpop is 76% cacao, and in just two years, weâve seen the price of our core ingredient rise by over 250%.
And if the big players are feeling it, you can imagine what itâs like for small-batch, handcrafted makers like us.
At SoulPops, weâve spent the last year riding out the stormâholding onto our quality, our portion size, and our values.
Weâve refused to shrink what we offer or cheapen our ingredients, because we believe in making cacao that actually nourishes, not just fills a spot on the shelf.
But the truth is, the numbers no longer add up. Rather than compromise what SoulPops stands for, weâve made the tough call to pause the business, for now.
This wasnât an easy decision. SoulPops has been a labour of love from day one. Itâs brought us so much joy, connection, creativityâand youâve all been a huge part of that.
Weâre proud of what we built.
Proud that we never cut corners.
And so grateful for every one of you who supported us with your purchases, messages, feedback, and love.
Weâre stepping back now to reassess, reflect, and explore what might be next.
Maybe this is the end of this chapter. Or maybe itâs just a turning point. Either way, weâre not rushing.
Thank you for being part of our journey.
Thank you for choosing real food, real flavour, and real values.
And thank you for loving SoulPops.
With all our cacao-covered hearts,
Lon, Nat, Bree and Gerry.
