Why we ❤️ our weekly divvy?

Hubsters also known as food warriors, the essential link between local farmers and families wanting fresher, cheaper and better-for-us produce.

We stand in support of better and transparent pay to our hardworking farmers who are hard hit by eccentric weather plus high expenses costs to ensure they can maintain sustainable farming for generations to come.

Once a week, we don on our aprons and dance around our garages or carport with fresh produce and pantry products, dropping them into named boxes with all the excess produce as well.

Then the best part, when our families come collect their boxes and we get to catch up. Kids to play together, recent news exchanged and connections strengthened, filling one another’s cup ❤️

Thank you all who make it happen, week in week out, and Box Divvy team in keeping the wheels turning. It’s a food system that works and hopefully can flourish to more suburbs.

One of my favourite soup to use up stale baguette…Tuscan Ribollita based in tomatoes, cannellini beans, Tuscan kale and thickened with stale bread. Plus any veggies loitering in the back of my crisper drawer and the stored Parmesan rind in freezer.

Ribollitta means to “re-boil.” Traditionally, it’s reheated and eaten several days in row, getting better and better each day. Hubby is lucky enough to have a lunch this time.

Have you other ways to use up stale bread?

❄️ Say Cheese! New Dairy Lines Have Arrived ❄️

🆕 a2 Milk Australia Range

It all starts with the cows. We conduct a simple DNA test on a tissue sample taken from the cows to identify those that naturally produce milk with only A2-type beta-casein protein and no A1 protein. Every batch is then tested again before it reaches your fridge, so you can feel confident in what you're drinking. The result? Milk that may be easier on digestion for some people, with all the goodness of natural dairy milk.

Available in full fat and lite 2L bottles – both regular and lactose-free. Around $7.50 per bottle.

More information on a2 can be found in comment.

🆕 Cottage Cheese range from Brancourts Dairy

Brancourts was established in 1895 when the Brancourt family immigrated from France and settled in North Bankstown on a 40-acre farm making cheese using authentic French recipes.

Cottage cheese is a fresh, mild cheese made by curdling milk and draining off most of the whey, leaving behind soft, white curds. Unlike cheddar, parmesan or tasty cheese, it is not aged, which gives it a fresh, slightly tangy flavour and a moist texture.

Because it's high in protein and fairly neutral in flavour, it can replace cream, ricotta, sour cream, mayonnaise, or even part of the cheese in many recipes.

These make up the 299 chilled products available through Box Divvy for delivery to your doorstep on Saturdays, just spend over $50 and it’s a free service 🚚

❄️ Handler reduces 2kg Chicken Breast by 13% ❄️

The chicken market appears to be ruffling a few feathers — in a good way. Andrew Handler has started spotting a few cracks in the poultry market, particularly when it comes to chicken breast. He’s pounced on the opportunity, trimming the price of our 2kg pack of chicken breast to just $27.90 — that's $13.95 per kilo.

Like our other chicken products, it's fresh (not frozen), but because it comes from a different supplier, it's currently the only chicken line that's enjoyed a price cut.

Andrew is quietly optimistic that the smaller breast packs and chicken thighs might decide to join the party before too long 🤞🏻

New Season Cara Cara 🍊

What are Cara Cara?
Cara Cara oranges are a type of navel orange with a striking salmon-pink to reddish flesh inside. From the outside they look almost identical to a standard navel orange, but when cut open they resemble a cross between an orange and a pink grapefruit.

Where did they come from?
They were discovered in 1976 on a single branch of a Washington Navel orange tree at Hacienda Cara Cara in Venezuela. The pink-fleshed branch was a natural mutation (known as a "sport"), and growers propagated it by grafting.

How do they taste?
This is why they've become so popular. Compared with ordinary navels, Cara Caras are:
• Sweeter
• Lower in acidity
• Less sharp or tangy
• Often described as having hints of raspberry, blackberry, cranberry or rose flavours
• Seedless, like most navels

Many people who find standard oranges a bit acidic absolutely love Cara Caras 😍

Why are they pink?
Unlike blood oranges, which get their red colour from anthocyanins, Cara Caras get their pink-red colour from carotenoids, particularly lycopene (the same pigment found in tomatoes and watermelon).

Are they healthier?
Nutritionally they're similar to other oranges:
• High in vitamin C
• Good source of fibre
• Rich in antioxidants
• Contain more lycopene than standard navels because of the pink flesh

Are they grown in Australia?
Yes, our Cara Cara are Australian-grown. They’re a tad more expensive than regular navels right now, but should come down in price once the season really gets underway.

My kiddo is a big fan of Cara Cara, having started eating oranges all because of them. Will you try them with us?

Price Rollback to 1999 and Seasonal Spotlight 🔦

Butternut pumpkin 🎃

It's the 5th of August 1999, and Woolworths advertises Butternut Pumpkin for $1.49 a kilo. Fast-forward 27 years: Box Divvy Rolls Back pumpkin prices to 1999.

Butternut pumpkin: $1.49 a kilo.

Inflation? Never heard of her. (Meanwhile, over at Woolworths, it's $3.50 a kilo).

Lemon 🍋

Life offers you lemons? Make lemonade

Times are weird when you realise household cleaners contain real lemons, but lemonade does not!

They’re 60c apiece. That’s less than half the supermarket price (and it’s on special, and you’ll have to buy at least 4). Some specials are real lemons…

Kiwi 🥝

"Love thy neighbour". Yes, we love Kiwis! The people and the fruit. NZ fruit is boosting supply and reducing prices. Thank you New Zealand. Down to 70c each this week.

Cherry tomatoes 🍅

All tomatoes are good value, but this one takes the cherry: just $2 a serve = punnet = handful.

“Help mummy, I’m lost in the celery forest!”

Box Divvy price rollback to 1999 this week featured 99¢ bunch of celery.

Produce markets regularly experience gluts when favourable growing conditions create abundant supply. Faced with oversupply, growers can either plough crops back into the ground or sell them cheaply.

At Box Divvy, when farmers drop their prices, we pass those savings directly to members 👋🏻

There's another side to the story. In some cases, farmers are receiving the same price for their produce today as they did 27 years ago, despite massive increases in diesel, fertiliser and labour costs 😢

What will you be doing with your celery forest?

The Hunter Valley Training School for Young Hens is back in full swing

Hunter Valley has a heavy supply of 600g eggs as their young flock gets into the swing of laying. We’ve agreed to help them out, and you’re the beneficiary.

We’re selling them for $5.58 per dozen – 30% less than the 700g carton price. The difference between 600g and 700g is only 14% so you’re winning!

And remember, Hunter Valley runs the farm at a low flock density of 950 hens per hectare. Most major supermarket brands are at 10,000 hens per HA. That’s a bit of a squeeze!
