🍊 Afourer mandies $2.49/kg at 44c ea

WOOLIES, YOU’VE BEEN PIPPED AT THE POST.
On Wednesday 4 August 1999, Woolworths advertised Murcott mandarins for $2.49 a kilo. Back when dial-up internet gave you enough time to peel one before a webpage loaded.
More than 27 years later, Box Divvy matches the price - and loses the pips. We’ve got seedless Afourers, because late-season Murcotts can turn a simple snack into a competitive spitting event.

Same price. Fewer projectiles. That’s progress.

But here’s the bit that’s hard to swallow: on some produce lines, farmers are still receiving prices much like those they got in 1999. Nobody appears to have told their fuel, fertiliser or electricity suppliers.

Seasonal Spotlight 🔦

🥔 Royal Blue potatoes

Distinctively coloured purple, Royal Blue potatoes are a fairly recent spud - appearing on the scene in 1995. It was bred from another variety (Asterix, named after the hero who takes on the Romans in the French cartoon Asterix and Obelix) by a Dutch grower.

Even more distinctive than the skin is the yellow creamy colour inside. This variety is best-suited for mashing and roasting.

Mashing: their naturally buttery, golden flesh and smooth texture create a rich mash that requires less added butter and milk.

They are also great for roasting: they crisp up exceptionally well on the outside while staying fluffy and soft on the inside.

For the most crunchy roast, peel and boil until it’s almost tender. Let the potato cool whilst you pre-heat the oven to 220 C. Lay the potatoes on a baking tray and squash them just a little with a spoon or flat spatula until it’s cracked - but not falling apart. The idea is to create lots of surface that can crunch up. Next, sprinkle with salt - and then with generous lashings of olive oil. Into the oven for 20-30 minutes until they’re golden. Serve with coleslaw and barbecued sausages.

💚 Asparagus 3 serves for $4

On 1 April 1992, Woolies advertised asparagus for $1.49 a serve. No April Fool’s joke. We think. Thirty-four years later, Box Divvy has pressed rewind on the cassette player: 3 serves for $4 — just $1.33 each.

🧡 Papaya $3.75 ea

As we predicted last week, tropical fruit from North Queensland will see improved supply. After passionfruit, it's papaya's turn: $3.75 each, and a decent size at that. Sprinkle some lime juice over the papaya to enhance its flavour, and you'll find yourself in tropical paradise.

🍊 Blood Oranges 55c ea

Bloody hell, the Sydney Swans are missing out on the Grand Final this year. No Bloods! Mind you, no Victorian clubs either: the last Melbourne club to win the Grand Final were the doggies, back in 2021. So it's Brisbane vs Freo, and as we have just launched in Queensland (and have no Hubs in Perth), we'd have to barrack for the Lions. Anyhow, as we were anticipating the Swannies to make it into the Final, we'd lined up blood oranges as this week's Divvy Pick. They're locked in anyway, at $2 a kilo. Another bloody good Divvy Deal.

🥕 Carrots $1.25/kg bag

Despite the initial success of the Myxoma virus in the 1950s and calicivirus more recently, rabbit numbers in Australia are heading into record territory: the latest estimate is between 200m and 250m rabbits. They are a major threat for agriculture and our domestic animals.
At the same time, there’s an abundance of carrots. Our cunning plan? Make them so cheap that they’re all eaten by humans, leaving nothing for the rabbits. Ok, maybe we’re clutching at carrots here…
