Buy a jar, fund a new bee-hive.
It was a late, mellow afternoon in the Autumn of 2018 when it all started. That time of the day when the sun is low, and trees are throwing long, intertwined shadows. We were talking about climate, environment, crops, food and wildlife... about the way things are and how they used to be. Somehow we ended up talking about bees and reflecting on the silent, little known and rarely acknowledged role they have as pollinators of cultivated crops from cherries to pumpkins, from apples to sesame oil. We also talked about the nutritional difference between a teaspoon of honey, alive with enzymes, and a teaspoon of ‘dead’ sugar.
A brief “what if”, ”why not” exchange occurred and minutes later we found ourselves talking about where do we buy the bees from, where do place the hives, how many bee hives we start with and, as we had no prior knowledge or know-how, how do we learn to care for them. Well , in these times when knowledge is so abundant and accessible, the only thing one needs is the will to learn. We blended, reading, watching, asking and listening with learning by doing and progressed along the way.
Having excess honey was an after thought. A good problem to have.
Three months after the “what if”, ”why not” conversation, in November 2018 the two packages of bees arrived. That was 4 kilograms of bees and two queen bees. two seasons later, the two hives became 10.
