"I’ll start looking after myself once I’ve sorted out my stress, my job, and my past." Sound familiar?

Here’s the truth: healing doesn't wait for you to perfectly resolve your inner life. Your future isn't set in stone, and your prognosis isn't a life sentence. Mystery isn't the roadblock holding you back, and unexpected shifts aren't the exception to the rule.

Where are you holding out for 100% certainty before you allow yourself to heal? What would happen if you let go of that tight grip just a little bit?

We’re obsessed with having everything mapped out, but when it comes to chronic illness, demanding absolute certainty can actually keep you stuck.

Research shows that patients who can hold flexible beliefs about their health, who can sit in the mystery without collapsing into total despair, actually have better clinical outcomes. Being okay with "not knowing" isn't confused thinking, but a sophisticated mental muscle.

You don't need to know exactly what you're healing toward to keep moving forward. Let go of the need for a final answer and leave some room for a bit of magic.

When someone receives a diagnosis, it’s natural they have questions. “How long will this take?” “Why is this happening to me?” “Will I fully recover?”

Each of these queries is a natural response to something that can feel beyond our control. But the funny thing about healing is sometimes we just don’t know. Sometimes we need to sit in the uncertainty, in the knowledge that there are both mysteries and miracles.

In this episode, we discuss that uncertainty, looking at:

- Why allowing yourself to live within the question rather than demanding immediate answers can open pathways to healing.
- Ways to recognise extraordinary recoveries not as exceptions, but as realities that medicine has yet to fully understand.
- How the healing journey often requires releasing fixed expectations and embracing a flexible mindset.

Understanding Uncertainty

Many people find uncertainty more daunting than the illness itself. It is a pervasive wound. And sometimes this need for knowing obstructs healing at the soul level. In our pursuit of certainty, we may overlook the healing potential of mystery.

Miracles: Rethinking the Impossible

While miracles might seem relegated to the realm of the devout, they are documented realities. They expand our understanding of what’s possible beyond the confines of prognosis. They present a reality that exists without the boundaries set by our current medical understanding.

Miracles might emerge as spontaneous remissions, unexplained recoveries, or simply as the body choosing to defy the odds. These instances teach us that maybe the greatest certainty of all is the presence of the unknown.

The Interplay of Mystery and Certainty

Medicine and science are rooted in the promise of certainty. Diagnoses and prognoses create a framework for understanding illness. Yet, thinkers like Richard Feynman and Marcello Gleiser highlight a crucial aspect of knowledge: the more we know, the more we realise remains unknown. Mystery coexists with knowing, forming the cutting edge of healing.

Staying open to mystery doesn't equate to hope laden with empty promises. It's about recognising that each body is unique and cannot be fully governed by statistical probabilities. Acknowledging this can lead to a better quality of life and sometimes, improved clinical outcomes.

The Power of Belief and Presence

The placebo effect, often dismissed or misunderstood, demonstrates that belief can prompt genuine healing responses in the body. This isn’t merely a psychological trick. It’s a powerful, documented interaction where the quality of care activates the body’s innate healing capabilities.

By nurturing openness and maintaining a presence, the healing process is enhanced. Every tradition recognises the healing power of attention where genuine presence becomes therapeutic, filling gaps in our understanding with its profound simplicity.

Living the Questions

Renowned poet Rainer Maria Rilke once advised to 'live the questions.. In the context of healing, it means resisting the urge to prematurely seal off the mystery with tidy conclusions. Instead, it invites a more patient and attentive inhabiting of the unknowns.

The hardest work often lies not in the treatment itself, but in enduring the liminal space of not-yet-resolved health and trusting in a timeline beyond our control.

Embracing Healing's Journey

Healing involves expansion…of the mind, the spirit, and even the boundaries of medical certainty. As you journey through healing, ask yourself:

Where do I demand certainty in my healing process?
What might change if I held uncertainty more lightly?
Have I experienced unexplained shifts in my healing?

Let these questions open you to the spaciousness where healing can occur in unexpected ways. Healing is a journey, and it calls us to embrace both mystery and miracles.

Over my years in practice, I’ve watched a strange paradox unfold: our scientific understanding of the body has absolutely exploded, yet we are more exhausted, stressed, and chronically unwell than ever.

We now have incredible tools like microbiome mapping that show us exactly what’s happening in our internal ecosystem. But these advanced tests are revealing a worrying trend, our internal worlds are drying up.

Science is great, but it’s reminding us of a very old truth: we cannot separate our health from the way we live.

"Should I just grab a probiotic from the chemist?" It’s the number one question I get asked.

The honest answer? Sometimes, but it’s not a magic pill. If you drop a bunch of good bacteria into an environment that is still highly inflamed, nutrient-depleted, and chronically stressed, those expensive microbes are just going to pass straight through you.

Before we seed the garden, we have to prep the soil. Address the stress, eat the fibre, and give those bugs a reason to stay.

When I look at microbiome test results in my clinic, it’s not the bad bugs that worry me most. It’s what is missing.

Time and time again, I see results in which the good guys, the guardians of the gut, like Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Akkermansia, barely register. They've been depleted to the point where the gut can no longer properly nourish or protect itself.

And this isn't just happening to a select few; it's showing up across the board, regardless of age or lifestyle. It's time we stopped treating symptoms and started replanting the garden.

When health professionals harp on about eating more fibre, we’re not just trying to keep your bowel habits regular (though that’s a massive plus!).

We’re trying to feed your good bacteria so they can produce something called butyrate. Think of butyrate as the premium fuel your colon cells need to stay strong, keep inflammation down, and protect your gut barrier.

Your gut is the home base of your immune system and is in constant conversation with your brain. If the ecosystem runs out of fuel, the knock-on effects ripple through your whole body.

Inside your gut sits an invisible rainforest. Home to trillions of tiny organisms, this ecosystem has evolved alongside us for millions of years.

These microbes aren't just hitching a free ride. They’re working around the clock to digest your food, make your vitamins, keep your hormones in check, chat to your brain, and protect your gut lining.

When you look after the forest, the forest looks after you.

We’ve spent decades trying to sterilise our lives, but we’ve accidentally cleared out the very microbes we need to survive.

But here’s the good news: just as damaged Aussie bushland can regenerate after a fire, your gut can recover, too. It doesn’t require a cupboard full of expensive, fancy supplements or another miserable, restrictive diet. It’s about returning to basics.

Feed your microbes real, diverse plants. Get your hands dirty in the garden. Share a proper meal with mates. Let’s stop trying to fight nature and start living in it.
