Two years ago today, we lost Bill Moyes.
To many of us, hang gliding is freedom, adventure, and a lifelong passion.
But it’s important to remember where it all began.
Inspired by Francis Rogallo’s flexible wing concept and John Dickenson’s revolutionary ski-wing design, Bill Moyes helped transform an idea into a sport. What began as a wing designed to be towed behind a boat became something much bigger when Bill discovered it could be foot launched from a hill.
From those early flights came an entire world of free flight: schools, competitions, manufacturers, records, adventures, and generations of pilots who have experienced the incredible feeling of leaving the ground with nothing but a wing and the wind.
Today, we remember not only Bill’s achievements, but also the passion, vision, and determination that helped shape the sport we love.
For newer pilots, it’s worth taking a moment to appreciate the pioneers who made it all possible. Every launch, every thermal, and every landing is connected to the people who came before us.
Thank you, Bill, for everything you gave to hang gliding and free flight.
Your legacy continues to fly.
